Mileage Reporting 16th Week of 2013

but she did grow up doing a civil war, and she's lost a good deal of her side of the family to disease.
I think its nice that you are willing to just put her mind at ease for now. That's love.

But yah, the wifely concern is supposedly in my best interests, and not just party-poopping, so I guess I can't complain too much. Better than a spouse who was trying to off me, right?
Sometimes feels like party pooping though Lee, at least when my wife does it. She is looking out for me, but still... Might be a reason I don't really cycle out on the roads now a days. It freaks the wife out too much after every year we have cyclists get hit by cars and killed, back in 2007 there was a guy killed in the club I rode with. That one actually scared me and caused me to listen to the little lady... I haven't rode on the road since 2008 I think and am now going to sell/trade my road bike for a spin bike for the house.

Yah, despite having traveled for two years on a bike, including in places known for pretty crazy driving, like Africa and the Middle East, I don't like mixing it up with cars anymore. They just don't see you, and it's gotten worse with cell phones. Just the other day I saw a guy in front of me almost veer into the parked cars to our right because he was trying to look up and dial a number. I gave him a honk. If a bike had been alongside him, who knows what would've happened?

But mass murder is much less common. Still, like Laura says, no use stressing out the ones we love. Growing up in America, I'm kind of used to the idea that once in a while some wacko is going to kill a bunch of people, and there's not a whole lot you can do about it. But there's 300 million of us now, so the chances of it happening to you, well, there are a lot of other things to worry about first, like getting hit by a car if you're on a bike.

And as you know, I was already ambivalent about running with a huge mass of other people, so it's not a real huge sacrifice. If I didn't participate on this site, and hear so many racing stories, I wonder if the idea of entering a race would've even occurred to me. You've said it wasn't really your thing either, right?

Anyway, it's raining now, supposed to turn to snow later in the day. I'm already getting psyched for a romp in the elements. That'll have to be enough excitement for the time being.

Ya, but I do like the small races. I have PTSD though too and am not very comfortable in big crowds. I'm also a country boy from MT so being downtown already puts me on edge and then combine that with the PTSD and not a good situation. I did really like the one trail race I did last year with some of the OR BRS crew, but that was super small and not crowded at all. I also really liked the one race I did way out in the burbs, I think it only had 600 people in it when I did it. I think from now on if I do races it will just be the really small races because I feel more comfortable with them. Also in the small races there is less people to dodge around and so it's easier to get a pr while running less distance (less zigzagging means less distance traveled in a race).

Did 4.03mi in 47:41. Note that I said "did" and not "ran" because someone who would rather remain nameless, but in fact is Dama, thinks that the 12 m/m is too slow for running! :D OK, maybe it is. So let's say I "Skipped, flapped my arms like a bird while making farting noises with my mouth for 4.03mi in 47:41". Better?

FWIW, I don't have PTSD, and I don't like big crowds either. One of my favorite races is called Race Through the Redwoods in the Santa Cruz Mts. Being that it's held in a CA state park, entrants are limited to 700, so I don't get that "sea of humanity feeling" like running the larger 10K's.

Then again, as stated before, I think I'm getting more misanthropic as I get older. Or maybe some people just suck and I don't like being around them :D

You have this "Not Running" form nailed down...the arm movement alone has to be more aerodynamic thus faster...maybe Dama can get some lessons from you...her speed is a little slow right now.:D

Noticed some higher humidity on my run this afternoon...HR was a bit high so had go slower even walked a couple times on the hills. Local roads 6 miles running plus 1 mile walking.

This ends my 2nd week of the running season...ramped up the miles plenty fast and will keep it between 15 - 20 miles a week for the near future. Skin on the ball of left foot is peeling some...no hotspots or blisters must just be adapting and shedding a bit.

Right after reading about Bare Lee's wife's concerns, I went running and was remembering how gently my husband has treated my concerns since our one daughter died, then I saw a mama duck with new, fluffy little ducklings cross the path right in front of me and I found myself uncontrollably crying. Did you know it's really hard to see when your sunglasses are filling up with fluid? I was okay in a few minutes....

The whole run ended up being pretty exciting for me, in a good way. I found I was running between an 8:22 and 8:30 pace for the first 4 miles. The more I relaxed, the faster I went. I was a bit worried, since I was hoping to make it 15 miles, but it felt so fun! So, I decided to let it go on for 2 more miles, then evaluate everything. I have not run 6 miles that fast other than in a race!

When I did slow down, I found I was doing about 9:15 mm for a couple of miles, then it went down to about 9:30 mm pace, except for about mile 9 and mile 13 that ended up at 9:50 mm pace. I had to increase my stride at around mile 9 to deal with a tightening calf, so that helped keep up the pace some. (I was hearing all these BRS voices in my head about how to deal with it. :wacky:) I think I may have used some new muscles!

I made it 13.1 miles, having decided at mile 10 that would be a good idea. My Garmin says my average pace was 9 mm, fastest intermittent pace of 7:51, total time of 1 hour 58 minutes. I am very happy about this.

9.9km (6mi) slow run today, and apparently to the swiss standards, it is pouring down.....I had to laugh, this was a drizzle !!!

Lost myself in the woods, but the feeling of running on wet leaves, muddy tracks, is exhilarating, love it

Thursday afternoon
2.5 mi / 4 km
33 F / .5 C
20 F / -6.6 C windchill

Got off to another late start. Had to go over my wife's psych test results with her. On the way to my son's daycare, I parked on the other side of my neighborhood's biggest hill. By that time the rain had turned to wet snow and there were already about 3 inches of accumulation. Cars were slipping and sliding to get up the hill. I ran up the shallow side of the hill and then over and down the longer side, which ends at a lower elevation. From base to base it's about .3 miles overall. So one back-n-forth is a little over .6 miles. I think the first side is about a 50 ft change in elevation, while the second is about a 100 ft change, so close to a 10% grade I think. I wanted to run 5-6 miles worth of hills, but only had time to go back and forth four times. I guess I could've gone a few more times though, since neither of the kids was interested in leaving when I arrived to pick them up.

Anyway, felt great to do hill work again. I really should've done more of it over the winter. Feeling it a bit in my glutes this morning. It was fun with the wet snow and wind, plodding up and down, and my Vivobarefoot Neo Trails were perfect in these conditions. It was also nice to have an excuse to run shod and give my sore soles a break. Stopping at this hill on my way to my son's daycare also solves the problem of finding one of two decent routes on the way to or nearby his new daycare. And the high school track is also on the way, just a block away from this hill, so once that clears of our fresh snow (seven to eight inches as of this morning, with more on the way!) I may have my two weekday, workaday workout runs worked out: Tuesdays hills, Thursdays intervals. And then Saturdays I can get in a little weekend adventure exploring routes 10 miles and over on my weekly LSD run. That would be three different kinds of running, which would be good for keeping my legs fresh and mitigating repetitive stress issues.

Now if we could just have our spring. Although I must say, it's quite beautiful out right now. The wet snow is covering the trees' branches, even the tiniest, creating a wonderfully white winter wonderland.

Not looking forward to driving in it in two hours though, das fer sher.

Now you just went and made me miss home, I mean Montana, with those pictures. We rarely ever get snow here in Oregon, which I don't think we even did this winter.

Hahaha, better much better. See? I told you posting your "runs" makes you a faster "runner" so keep it up!
