Mileage Reporting 17th Week 2013

Chiming in for yesterday. I'm starting to taper, and with my somewhat thin skinned pads so far I'm tapering a little extra. After work I was going to jog at the nearby park but I was still feeling my big lunch in my gut. Figured I'd give it the extra 45 minutes to digest by driving home and running up there. Got home and got dressed, looked pretty stormy out, decided I didnt want to go to far from the house so I picked the trail right by my house. Gravel on that trail in spots, and wanting to baby my feet a little, so I decided to try an easy jog in my huaraches. Surprisingly they felt good, didnt have the arch cramps I was having in the winter running in footwear. I wonder if the cold was affecting them. Anyhow, got 5 miles in yesterday.

Wednesday afternoon
"Middle" ST workout

Finally facing up to the fact that late-afternoon interruptions or delays have somehow become more likely lately,
I started a half-hour early.
And sure enough,
I was interrupted for about 15 minutes by my wife on her way to English conversation class at the local library.
But that still left me with 75 minutes,
which is really about the right amount of time for my denser,
new,
three-day-a-week ST schedule.
By the end I really couldn't have done much more,
and got a marvelous pump.
Today my 'core' is sore.
So I think from now on I'll plan on all ST workouts and weekday runs lasting 75-90 minutes instead of an hour.
Seems like I'm hitting the next level of overall fitness.
I wonder how many more there are?
Moremore and furtherover,
with temps becoming reasonable again,
it's nice to workout shirtless in the garage and break a sweat.

Seriously though, I see people here in Iowa running on very cold weather or sometimes people just wear a sweatshirt even if the temp is below freezing. I really like to know how they can tolerate that type of thing.
We're natives. My daughter (who was actually born in Mozambique) and her friends play outside in t-shirts when it's barely above freezing. If you grow up in this crap, you don't know any better. My wife on the other hand, has very little tolerance for the cold, like you, but she's gotten a lot better since we came here.
Ran 1.62 miles today, all with my feet bare
Congrats on the continuing improvement.

As for the soles, you just gotta give it time. Your pads will come back in a month or so. The body wastes no time diminishing them when they're not in constant use. When my frost nip froze my calluses off, it took a good two months for them to re-form, and even two weeks ago I got a lot of abrasion on a longer run, so I guess they're still not quite up to where they were pre-nip. One of my goals this summer is to see if I can develop the pads even more by seeking out rougher surfaces, and doing all my interval work (I hesitate to call what I do 'speedwork') on the sandy gravel hs track.
I hate the heat...
You're like my dad and younger brother. They're miserable in the heat. My younger brother keeps his house at 60 degrees.
I don't think one gets to exercise on the day one's spouse has shoulder surgery... sure would have helped, though.
Hope everything went well!
Another long long swim. 1:45 in the water. Counted freestyle laps this time. It was a lot, and got easier the more I went, until my little arms started to get tiiiiired.
no hot shower afterwards; something wrong with the plumbing. bummer.
That's a frickin' long time to be in the water! Seems like you've transposed your long-a$$ runs into long-a$$ swims pretty well. Impressive. I think I can do about five minutes before I'm pooped.

Actually Dama, as long as I am running I prefer to be barefoot, even in our coldest temps of 30degF. ;) We don't get very cold usually so I can run barefoot down to 30, even with the rain. Now, this stupid injury that has lasted so long has had me try numerous shoes so that I could run. Oh, on the coldest days I do usually like to run a mile or so in huaraches first so that my feet are good and warm with the blood flowing. The problem I have, and always have had, is tender soles barefoot. I'm wondering if this is just a product of only running on roads with pretty much zero trails, or if my injury stopped me from developing my soles like they should have been because I kept throwing footwear on to deal with that injury. In any case, now that my heel is fixed and I am able to run again, barefoot feels best again for running although my soles are pretty tender again despite no visible wear spots nor do I have any blisters. Hopefully the MRI will show what's going on with the peroneal tendon problem I have going on, but even that seems to be bothering me less and less the more I go barefoot or huaraches.

Fine, I am letting you win this time but don't get use to it cause it won't happen again.
I too run only paced roads and don't have problems with the soles of my feet.
I think the main reason as to why you're a tender foot still is because you haven't build up enough running distance for the soles to adapt. And that's my story and I am sticking to it.

Well you're just too nice to leave your poor husband unattended.:)
My husband on the other hand didn't let me skip my runs when he had leg surgery he will actually kind of pushed me out the door with his crutches because he knows that if don't run I'll get cranky as hell and he won't have any of it. Isn't he sweet(I know he was just looking after himself)?

I can fully understand your wife coming from tropical paradise to the midwest makes winter a little more dificult for me to handle. My husband on the other hand loves them cold winter days he's also a Viking so he keeps telling me(he was born on western minnesota). If it were up to my husband the thermostat will be all the way down to the southpole but needless to say I have fully control of that little thing:happy:
Nice workout you had there btw.

Thanks. Ya, at one point I could run half marathon distance barefoot, so hopefully that comes back. Even then I still had tenderfoot though, although it could have been quite a bit milder than it is now. Hopefully the soles will come back enough that I can enjoy my runs more again. On a good note my lower legs do not hurt as much today as they have been after runs. Not sure if it's just them adapting or if it's because I was a full minute off my normal pace yesterday because of the heat.

As far as the heat goes, my wife gets mad at me all the time because during the day I turn the heat off in the house. Then she gets home in the afternoon and has ice flowing through her veins or something and freezes. Basically, once it hits about 50-55degF the air conditioner in my car comes on. Of course it is humid to me here (not as bad as say NC, but still pretty humid) which makes riding in a car almost claustrophobic for me if it's warm inside. Makes me feel like someone is trying to smother me. My wife on the other hand always has the heat on in her car because she is always freezing. Long road trips, ya, they are miserable for me. I don't see why I have to be the one to suffer though. She can put more clothes on, I can't really take more off without the risk off public indecency...

Now that I'm running consistently again, I don't have to do nearly as much maintenance work. I still stretch and massage, but I don't seem to need it as much as when I was building up distance. And I only do mobility work/dynamic stretching once a week these days, and that seems to be enough. So I assume that's what's happening in your case, as your legs get reconditioned. Still, last week I got a little niggle on the top of my left foot, a reminder that I can't slack off on massaging my lower leg for more than a few days without risking rousing the TOFP beast from his fitful slumber.

I also like to use soreness as a gauge. I figure you should always be a little sore after a workout, or else you didn't push it enough, but never completely stiff, which means you pushed it too far. Today I'm a bit stiffer than I normally am after a ST workout, which means I probably did a little too much yesterday, but damn, I'm really getting into my revamped back/middle routine. For some reason, it also seems to make a difference to start the week from the bottom of the body and work my way up to the top, leading to the weekend. I know it makes sense as a complement to my running schedule, but it also seems to give me a little psychological lift as well.

Don't get me started . . . Life isn't fair, that's all I got to say on that topic.

Thanks. We both miss the tropics. I can handle the cold fine, but I prefer heat. But so do a lot of diseases. And neither one of us misses those.

Finding it really hard to not go running today... I hate when you are starting to feel better after an injury and you get the hankering to do more than you should... I will probably just go hop on the bike for a little bit later. Hopefully that will stop this urge.

I am similar with the feet, last year I got up to half marathon distance, or just a little more on smooth asphalt, half that on rough road/chip seal mix. Never had much problem on the smooth roads up to 13miles, but I seem to have lost a lot of conditioning this past winter, and now even 10k races on the paved park trail are wearing the pads down and 8miles of easy paced running too. Haven't even tried the rough roads & chip seal around my house yet this year.

As far as temps go I'm pretty flexible... besides a window AC unit in my sons bedroom (finished attic) we don’t have AC in our house, so it gets pretty hot in the summer. Maybe in the upper 80's inside? The attic walls would hit over 100. In the winter our wood stoves can struggle to keep up if its blowing out (drafty house) so temps often dip into the 50's. Although I've adapted to a wide range, it seems to take me longer to change seasons now. I get so used to being hot in the summer that I'm freezing all fall until like Jan I finally get used to the cold. I rarely use AC in the truck even, I bet I went last year with only using it a dozen times or less. And I think we hit over 90 degrees more than a dozen times. I prefer fresh air and breeze!

Just got back from my lunch time walk, 3.5mi. One of these times I'd like to start running at work, it just seems like a pain to have to dress back up all hot and sweaty. Plus I'd probably have to make a detour out to the parking garage to ditch the shoes in my truck and get em afterward. Maybe I'll start after my next race. It would be an easy way to add mileage while not altering my regular training, if I did that on my off days it'd be an extra 7 mi, or if I did it everyday mon-thur (we go out to lunch fri) that'd be an extra 14mi. That might even make up for a long run if we went out of town on the weekend or something.

p.s. Nick I am not sure why its splitting your quote into to. I tried editing even and it reverts back to 2 quotes automagically. Wierd.

Did my regular run, local roads over to Harbins park and back...1/2 mile walk then 6 mile run and 1/2 walk. Nice and sunny waited till it warmed up into the 50's...feets are still feeling the wear and tear from last Sunday but I managed ok. Ran here and there on the painted lines...there was a road crew over paving some spots including the roughest 100 ft or so of cracked up chip/seal...this run just got a little easier. Made the 6 miles in under a hour with walking 3 times on some of the uphills.

Next up...possible rain run this weekend...forecast for rain both days.

You were kicking it today weren't you;) refresh my memory please do you run every day?

I'd like to run everyday but I'm doing 3 or 4 days a week for now. I'm only running ultra-marathon training style... slow or walk the uphills, trot along the flats and run fast downhill so anywhere from 7:00 - 13:00 min pace all in the same run. This is how I would run a 30 - 50 mile race if my legs were in shape...big if.

So how do you like that type of training are you already running ultras?

Okay, mixed results on today's run, but it all brings me to some interesting personal statistics.

Longest barefoot fun today: 14 miles. Woohoo! The first 9 miles went very well, with me keeping a comfortable 8:45 - 9 mm pace. Then, my right calf started to cramp up and I had to slow down quite a bit. I decided to push through, try to adjust my form, etc., as part of a race day prep, should something like this happen. The cramp was finally gone by the end of the run, but I wasn't feeling like sprinting either.:meh:

However, in view of the fact that this WEEK I have set some personal week-total records for this point in my life (and possibly more than I did in a week in college when I went on my everyday weekday morning 5 mile run) and totally barefoot records AND did an extra hard speed work out at track practice, I'm not too disappointed. :D

I may run again on Saturday, since I got "out of sync" missing last Saturday's run, but if I do, it will definitely be entering new territory.
