Road surface is my major obstacle right now ...

It's almost like my lower legs and feet are dangling and along for the ride provided by the knees and hips. This is an exaggeration, of course, but it increases the feeling that I'm floating or gliding along above the surface -- running lightly
I also go with relaxed, but slower with shorter strides. The relaxing also seems to promote better form. I've tried going faster on rough asphalt, but only last about 4 miles before my feet get a bit sore. Relaxing with a slower pace lets me get far more mileage, but that's just me.

I do like Chris said and slightly higher cadence (ouch ouch ouch hop skip and a jump :D ) but then for me my form goes to crap at slower speeds so I speed up.

I have trained myself to make my leg buckle the instant I feel pain, instead of pushing away from it.
