When my sister graduated U-M in '73, she moved to Berkley the next day.
Some of my professors refered to Ann Arbor as "just a few square miles surrounded by reality"
It was my 70's experience as a grad student there that gave me the confidence to go barefoot anywhere I wanted without worrying about what others would think. Prior to that in suburban Detroit and then college at Wayne State University I was very well aware that I was being judged by my shoelessness, and did'nt want to be "caught" by certain types.
Ann Arbor was a barefoot paradise in the 70's, and every classroom had plenty of pairs of free feet, instructors included.
