Central park runners beware!!

Did you seriously just say "f-yas?" Ha!

yeah... don't know what got into me (but I think it may have been red, dry and French  ). And you left it there??? lol

Is that referencing the fact that you've lived in the USA for a long time?

yesssss ... 32 years. The first 32, in fact :)

I moved to Germany with my German wife end of '95 - just to try it out, yuk yuk. It worked out well for us and the time really flew once we had a kid! All of sudden, 16 years had gone by, whooosh!

Sorry to tease you like that. I wrongly assumed ppl just knew I'm as American as Harley Davidson. (Willie G. reference there, watch out)

32 years, I didn't realize. I was under the impression that you were German-born and had only spent a few years here. I don't know where I picked that up from though, besides the flag . . .
It's interesting interacting with people here in this virtual/textual world. I really have no idea who anyone is. I will now read your comments with a garbled American accent instead of with crisp German occlusions as I had been.
Just curious, you also have extensive running experience, no?

well, I started with HS track/X-country in the 9th grade, which was, hmmm... 1977? Been at it on and off since then. There were some pretty long 'off' phases in there, like 4 or 5 years at a pop, but I always started up again - only to be plagued by one syndrome or another, and then, Hello Barefooting! :D

Cool. What do you think of my current running routine of doing 1 day hill repeats (.2 miles up hill, .4 coming back down around the block), 1 day fartleks (paces between 7mm and 9mm, with walking breaks), and one or two days steady pace?

How's the cervical implant working out Willie? I see the specialist tomorrow.
If I don't like what I hear I may have to take a medical tourism trip to your part of the world.

Lee - I'm really not the one to ask about training plans/regimens, and I pretty much never have comments on the subject except to describe some particular drill or technique. I've gon through what I think was pretty much clinical overtraining, and so tend now to err on the side of caution. I also have long distances in mind, and have pretty much given up on speed, so my "routine" for the most part involves one long run on the weekend (or maybe every other weekend) plus a couple shorter runs during the week.

I have to do supplemental strength training to keep my legs from falling apart on me, but I've been pretty limited in my ability to cross-train so far this year because of:

Board - it doing GREAT! I have absolute 100% mobility in the neck and both of my shoulders feel better than they have for decades, seriously. I think the nerves had been partially blocked for a long time. This OP definitely counts as one of the top three things I've ever have had done for myself in my life.

FYI - I got a statement from the Hospital with a side-note mentioning that they billed my insurance 6,675 Euro for the entire procedure: six days stationary in the hospital, MRI, CT, Pain medication (LOT'S of pain medication pre-OP), post-OP therapy, the OP itself including the anesthesiologist, the titanium implant itself which I'm sure ain't cheap, etc, etc, etc... If you were to arrive with a current MRI and CT and didn't require such a long stay in hospital, I imagine it'd cost about half, maybe less (?)

I was also slated for e three-week rehab vacation (paid-for) at this place:

Medical Clinic Bad Rodach

But I cancelled it because it's just way more than I need and I can't afford to be away from my work for 3 weeks (already missed two from the "injury" and hospital stay). I opted for "Rehab-Sport" 3x a week for 3 months as a compromise. That'll be done here in town at a P/T place. I don't really need any therapy at all, but what the heck, I can let insurance pay for something once in a while.

Paw! just had a scare - wrote all that and then poof, the screen went black. Battery went dead... glad it was all there went I fired the box up again!

11 1/2 hours from now and I find out.

Well, Board?

YES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
If I do go to Germany to see Willie it will be just to enjoy a good bier together!
I had waited over THREE MONTHS to see the neurosurgeon in Ann Arbor, while my cervical issue first had become symptomatic 7 months ago. NINE doctors (7 MD's, 1 DO, 1DC/ND later this one was was agreed upon by all to be the decision maker I would be wise to follow.
Soooooooooooooo............

No surgery at this time, possibly never, and only a follow-up appointment if symptoms worsen significantly.

Restrictions? Yeah, no football! Seriously, he said to keep doing what I've been doing, including moderate running, moderate cycling, etc. He was'nt joking about football, he said any activity where you think you are likely to go head first into a person or object stay away from.
Of interest to all of us:
As I realized all to well my condition is considered to be a part of the natural ageing process. He said that activity is known to increase the rate of joint ageing, and that the spine is just one long series of joints. But, activity is also well known to delay OTHER aspects of ageing. He said it's all a delicate balance, and that NOBODY knows the secret to the correct balance.
I believe that, and will try to find that balance as it applies to me.
Leaving for Oshkosh tomorrow or Friday, and will try to balance walking, cycling, airplanes, family, camping, chilling, high-fat grilling food/low fat grilling food, light beer, real beer, and SOME time online when practicle.
Hope to catch up with Y'all in August, and thanks so much for all of your support this past year.
TJ, you coming? Scott?

Yah, that makes a lot of sense. I think impact is what ages the joints the most, so running is probably best replaced by swimming as we age, but I'm a terrible swimmer, and going to a pool involves a certain amount of rigamarole, compared to running, where you can just open the door and go. It's also a good justification for continuing to do deliberate, controlled strength-training with free weights, as opposed to more vigorous but impactful 'functional fitness' stuff. My doc says my joints are like those of a man 20 years younger, and I attribute it to having done free-weights, on and off, for most of my adult life.
Anyway, good to hear you're still in the game. I was under the impression that you would have to give up running soon.
And have a good time in Oshkosh! My dad and younger brother are pilots, so Oshkosh used to be a yearly ritual.

I'm more than glad you got the all-clear for activity, Board. I know how it would have driven you crazy if you couldn't live the way you want. I've been praying for you.

Scott will be leaving for Oshkosh Monday. (We're in Destin now. LOVE the white sandy beaches and aqua water! Boys are having a blast.) Scott's flying in with a friend/co-worker who is also a CFI. What are you flying? Are you pitching a tent? I'll ask him to look for you. I'll tell him to look for the "barefoot guy, most likely the only one around." Hee. I think you guys missed each other last year because of the storm. I'm still a big sissy when it comes to flying, so I'd rather just stay on the ground, thank you very much. I'm not sure what he's flying this time. I'll let you know and post back here, since we are now hi-jacking this thread. Hee.

He's flying a Piper Comanche. It's white and blue. He will have a large blueish/grayish tent pitched outside the plane. And sadly, he will be wearing shoes. :(
