Hello everyone.

I am new to barefoot running and also to this forum.

I have been running barefoot for a few weeks now and I really enjoy it. Even though I have read and watched videos on barefoot running technique, I decided to make some videos of myself running barefoot.
In this video it seems like I am heel striking. And I know I am not supposed to but this style really feels comfortable for me even though I am not landing on my forefoot. In video 2 (in the same video) I tried doing some forefoot landing. To me this was really uncomfortable but maybe I am doing it wrong?
If any of you could watch my video and comment on what you see I would be really happy. Any advise and tips would really help me out.
Thanks for taking the time and thanks for a great forum.

The reason you feel uncomfortable in Video 2 is because you are not used to running like that. The first video you are heel striking, your body is just trained to run like from years in running shoes. (It might not feel like you are heel striking and looking closely the heel is not exactly hitting first, but just by the video I can see the back of the foot is taking all the impact, not good. This will not work for unloading purposes as well. The calf acts like a loading spring and will not function properly if you continue to put all the pressure on the back foot)

If you continue to heel strike running barefoot, it will be a nightmare for your progression, and lead to constant injuries. Video 2 should be uncomfortable, which is a good thing because that's the correct way to run. The main goal for you know is to learn how to run with this new style of running, which is forefoot. Don't worry about distance and speed, it's all about mastering form right now.

Enjoy the transition and Good Luck!

Video 1 and video 3 you are most definitely heel striking which as Gentile states could injure you. It does take time to learn how to run barefoot and you really do want to learn to land with a midfoot or forefoot strike. I noticed in video 2 that you had landed forefoot a couple times and then went back to a heelstrike with the last footstrike in the frame. The single hardest thing I've noticed with people when learning to run barefoot is having the patience to learn proper form. This is absolutely essential otherwise you risk injury. Just keep practicing a midfoot/forefoot strike on short distances. Eventually it will become normal for you and your distances and paces will get better. It's hard letting go of shod ideals, but if you are to transition successfully it is essential. We've all seen lot's of people who ignore this advice and then go and hurt themselves and then blame barefooting. It wasn't barefooting, it was the persons unwillingness to listen and properly learn. Good luck and I hope you stick with it. Any time you have questions go ahead and ask and the people on here are very smart and willing to help with advice.

Hello Ryan, I can't see your videos at work, but I think you have to read Ken bob's book (in case you haven't) "BAREFOOT RUNNING STEP BY STEP" in there you will find all the basics.
