I think I've got my calculations right here. New week?
I spent a night in my old hometown of Ballarat on Sunday night and decided to have a really good go at running a fast (ish) lap of the lake - a 6km track that everybody in Ballarat uses as a running yardstick. The track is a mixture of fine gravel and some bitumen, but it isn't the easiest barefoot experience, which probably accounted for some of the looks I got from the other runners.
On the bright side - I charged around in under 26 minutes, which is super-fast for me, and within a couple of minutes of the times I used to run as a whippet-like 18 year old. I also passed a guy wearing a singlet advertising a local gym, which was weirdly satisfying.
On the not-so-bright side: my foot blew up in the last 200m, and I'm now quite sore with the old Top Of Foot Pain chestnut. As per usual, everything felt fine until the point in time when it blew up. I haven't had that problem for a few years, so I'm not sure why it came calling this week. I can only assume that running faster on rough surfaces makes me 'scrunch up' my feet a little to protect them, and maybe that is the cause. Fingers crossed that it's only temporary.
