Barefoot YOW
This morning, we had our first frost of the season. That means it is time again for the 'Barefoot Winter Challenge'. An exploration of barefoot running in Winter conditions. Feel free to add your running experiences and help us track how members cope with running BAREFOOT in the winter.
A winter run is any run under 5°C (41°F)
How to participate:
1. http://bit.ly/n1I52I
- use this link to access the Google Spreadsheet
- add your name and location
- add the number of runs in each of the temperature ranges (spreadsheet calculates the totals)
- add your coldest (wind chill) barefoot run (use °C or °F column --- as the spreadsheet does the conversion)
2. http://bit.ly/obcgG2
- use this link to access the Google Map
- add your location and MemberID
I will add a posting to this thread each week, with charts, to show our progress through the Winter.
Note: Please use the temperature including wind chill

Last year Smelph had the most runs (25)
Barefooting Bob had the coldest (-29C or -20F)

temps and number of runs are there, but there isn't a spot for mileage. If we could split all the cells below the temp range row, we could have a number of runs column and a mileage column for each temperature category. Or we could just add a column for total mileage below freezing and just enter it by hand (meaning we'd have to add the miles ourselves as they accumulate).

I usually make a judgement call, if the start temp is at 6 degrees and the temp drops that counts in my books (but I would try to estimate the kms below if I can) if you start at 5 degrees and the temp goes up then I don't count it. That has been my problem so far this year, I have a number of runs that were started at 2 or 3 degrees but the temps quickly rose to 8 or 9 degrees. Oh well the negatives have started so I figure I will get some good ones in quickly. They are forcasting for -18 base temp for the weekend.

TJ you are suppose to log any run at 41 degrees F (5 degrees C) or under including the wind chill, do you know what the temp was with the windchill (I am assuming it was a cold wind), you might of achieved a new personal record low.

Cummulative number of runs in each temperature range.
Cummulative distance in each temperature range.
Note:
We leave it up to each individual to judge whether their run qualifies as a cold weather run.
ie
I start my 2 hr at 7am and it is -8C, and at 8am it is -4C. I could record it as the following:
1. One (1) run at an average of -6C
2. One (1) run at -8C AND one (1) run at -4C, using the corresponding distances
The highest temperature is +5C (41F), but I still think cold and wet sub 50F is a winter run. I find those to be the most difficult. Others can give their 2 cents worth.

Thanks, guys! Yesterday was my first run in negative temps (only -1 , but it was frosty!) and I had to cut the planned 10k down to 4k because despite lots of layers and Vaseline, the feet just wouldn't warm up. I'm thinking it may have something to do with the time of day. It seems that my feet have more trouble warming up when I go running first thing in the morning than in the evening. Possibly because the needed circulation needs a day of moving and walking around to really get going? Or then again, maybe it's just the difference in ground temp? Anyone else noticed this?

I assume the challege is for bare uncovered feet on ground? Otherwise it would seem to lose the challege aspect. My coldest run has been 27F and I find if I do some 20 or so squats and a 100up inside and head right outside running my feet have been fine. These have all been dry runs though, I'll be really cautious the first wet day I attempt sub-40s. The huaraches will be in my pocket.

Good Luck TJ, hope everything goes well.
OK, everyone doing these cold weather runs has just earned a high level of my respect. I just got back from a cold run "attempt". Ten degrees F on snow pack. I tried to do everything right. I bundled up, warmed up with 1/2 mile in shoes. Felt good, took off the shoes and made it 200 yards. Tops of the toes were cold! Put the shoes on and headed for home. By the time I got home, I was warm, so I headed down the driveway again. Made it about half a kilometer. Feet were numb and stabbing pains in the calves. Not much fun, but feeling the snow pack was nice, it covered the gravel.
So can you more experienced cold weather runners give some of us newbs some advice in a new thread?
Thanks,
Rick W.

Rick, my feet usually go
Rick, my feet usually go mostly numb in the beginning and then warm up as long as I keep moving. Some people say they only need about a kilometer and they're good to go, while I tend to need closer to three.
The difference between dry and wet running surfaces is also huge. Sometimes a wet run in the 5-10 degree range can be much more challenging than a dry run at below freezing temps. Last year I made the mistake of running through mud in the 5-10 degree range. Stupid. Stupid. Stupid. I basically just caked the freezing on my feet. Then I changed my planned route to get home quicker and warm up but had to run over a 150 meter long grate bridge with my not-quite-numb-enough stumps. Can you say OUCHIE?! That's one mistake I won't make again.

Thanks for the advice, I had a much better run today. Made it 1 mile. (not far, but improving)
Things I did different:
1. A longer warm up. Ran 2 miles in shoes and made sure my toes were completely warm. They were cold until I did toe "scrunches" with every step.
2. Ran on dry pavement.
3. Colder temp. today (3 F.), but no wind.
4. Faster cadence, more forefoot, and trying to grab with the toes. Michael Sandler's "Tiger Claws"

TJ, Hope the Doctors visit went okay.
I agree with the weather/temp situation. The 5C run I did was on a damp pavement. I am still getting my winter feet here. It's been closer to freezing but damp here, so I have been more cautious (also have a spot of ezcema on one of my toes, waiting for that to heal first).
However, I am still braver this year than last. I have been running in the cold temps/damp with just my Invisible shoes and socks. Didn't manage this much at all last year. So I think the extra weight I am carrying because of my injury hiatus has been helping me keep warm

@KittyK - I noticed my resistance to the cold is better this year. I managed to run 6k in slushy snow, and a couple of my runs have been wet and around 0°C. Glad to see you're healthy enough to get out for some runs.
@Rick - I think you're learning quickly. Dry pavement and increased cadence make a huge difference. As it has been said, your feet will take some time to heat up. For me, it is about 3-4km (2 miles). I find my feet go slightly numb. I pay close attention to my form, and wait for them to generate heat. If after 5k they are not warming up, I throw on some footwear.

That is my problem out here as well, the city has been dumping a pile of sand/salt mix with the freeze/thaw that has been going on (it was 7 degrees yesterday), I was barefooting and splashing through puddles last night and today we got a decent amount of snow fall that will probably melt by the end of the weekend. Shorts are coming out on Sunday, Thursday's run was in the evening and was about 9 miles and included a break after the City Park run before heading back out again to go meet the family. Yay, the snow has stopped
Yay, the snow has stopped dumping, the temperatures are creeping up to the freezing mark in the afternoons, and the highways are now mostly clear of snow/slush/ice. I've managed a couple of barefoot runs again after a hiatus of three weeks. 3k yesterday, 10k today. The gravel is still a killer, but I've found some more-travelled roads where the worst of it tends to be swept aside by passing vehicles.

Talk about weird weather! In Germany it's been below freezing for two weeks now. -14 in Frankfurt! What the...?!
I finally decided to brave the weather this morning and layered up well but  !!! By the time I realized my feet were not even going to try to warm up I was already too far out and ended up running 1.4km instead of just 1, which is what seems to be about what most people in the group have tried out. (Barefoot YOW, how do you do it? ) Three of my toes were definitely completely white and completely numb for those last 400m...

Chelsea, in my experience 1km
Chelsea, in my experience 1km isn't even close to long enough for my feet to actually start warming themselves. Mine usually take about twice that distance.
Something you could try next time would be to run in place or on a treadmill for 5-10 minutes before heading out. Just something to get the blood pumping in a warm place so they don't have to try to start from scratch out in the cold.

Bang on Smelph! And dry
Bang on Smelph! And dry pavement is glorious for winter running. I take about 3km to warm up. It becomes challenging to balance feet getting colder versus waiting for them to start pumping out the heat. That being said, I've had my touch of frostnip each winter I've run barefoot. Nothing too bad, but enough to lose about 1-2 mm of skin. When that happens I run on crusty snow. It is a giant pumice stone. Removes the dead skin like a charm.
I'm not a fan of warming up my feet before running outside. I find that they cool down much quicker. I prefer to head straight out barefoot and go as long as I can, knowing that my feet will warm up. If after 10-15 minutes there's no heat then on go the mimimalist shoes. (note: others have had great success using the warm up prior to heading outside)
For me, I can't get over how quickly I lose the padding on my feet in the winter. No matter how great your running form is, you still need to have the padding on your feet conditioned for barefoot running. My feet go through a cycle of summer/winter conditioning. I have been doing more gravel bucket running this winter, which makes running on chunky salt and road grit easier.
I hope that everyone makes it through this winter free from injury. It certainly builds character to run barefoot in the winter.

I used to wear shoes for 2
I used to wear shoes for 2 km, until I'd feel my feet pumping with some heat, and then shed the footwear. I don't always do that anymore, maybe because I've developed more faith in the inevitability of that foot-warming process, or because I don't feel the cold as much. But it does work very well, and it means that a beginner who might not be ready to run 3-4 km barefoot can still get a kilometre or so of comfortable warm-footed winter barefooting in.

I usually make a judgement call, if the start temp is at 6 degrees and the temp drops that counts in my books (but I would try to estimate the kms below if I can) if you start at 5 degrees and the temp goes up then I don't count it. That has been my problem so far this year, I have a number of runs that were started at 2 or 3 degrees but the temps quickly rose to 8 or 9 degrees. Oh well the negatives have started so I figure I will get some good ones in quickly. They are forcasting for -18 base temp for the weekend.

TJ -- That's the way to use
TJ -- That's the way to use the spreadsheet ....

On a side note, we have just gone back to the dark side (temps are back above zero), and we are expecting temps of above 5 degrees C tomorrow and the rest of the week, bye bye snow. Man this is a really weird winter so far.

Question: The temp ranges overlap. If I run at 0C/32F which column do I use? I'm in the Davis BF survey study so I'm pushing it this winter as at leasty 50% of my mileage needs to be BF.

Shorts are coming out on Sunday, Thursday's run was in the evening and was about 9 miles and included a break after the City Park run before heading back out again to go meet the family. That was a 4 mile run, so I was concerned with sweat, wet then freeze when I went back out. Better to be safe than sorry. But no worries Dutchie I will be out in shorts on Sunday for my HHH run. On on.

City Park runners go out on
City Park runners go out on Thursday nights? You are right in keeping the sweat in check. I was out for only 4 miles on Thursday and took off the shoes for the last mile. With the roads being so wet it kind of limits me as to how far I can go barefoot. Have a good run tomorrow. I am just coasting and in maintenance mode, and keeping my milage in check right now untill end of February.

City Park has a open run on
City Park has a open run on Thursday nights at 6:00 and Saturdays during the winter at 9:00 am and 8:00 am during the summer (usually about 10 to 20 runners or different levels) for the long run. They also do hill and speed training on Tuesdays as well in the summer. Great bunch of people and the owners (Erik and Cheryll) are fantastic. Trying to maintain some semblence of running until March myself.

Ran two laps on the indoor track before i was stopped by an employee who politely explained with a smile that she knew what I was doing. I think she called it natural run, but I needed to cover my feet. Socks would be ok. That is an improvement as last time socks were not good enough. Saw two VFF and a marrell. Wow much better than last winter.

Smelph and Rickwhitelaw both got in 2 runs. Go USA!! Good to see Rick back in the game!!! Hey, that means no Canadians ran this week. In my part of the country freezing rain then cold (-20C) weather has created ice shards too pointy for bare feet. I did manage 30 km in socks

Crazy temps at around -40 degrees with the windchill. Was temped to go for a quick jaunt but my mukluks were frozen to my feet. Did manage to get about 24 miles in my mukluks (does it count that my feet were bare inside just the shearling and deer hide separating my skin from the road) though.

i ran in frozen fog the other morning. 6 miles at 31F. i ran through a few ice spots and hit other spots of melted ice. my dog pulled me into grass a few times. once my feet started getting warm they would freeze again from the grass and all the water spots. my feet were quite sore. i didn't do anything the next day because my feet were itching so much.

The gravel is still a killer, but I've found some more-travelled roads where the worst of it tends to be swept aside by passing vehicles.

what a weird winter! We are having a hard time keep ing snow on the ground, which has been great for barefooting, but it's been so warm I've been losing "winter" runs due to the temps being too high!
190 miles seems attainable as long as conditions continue to be barefoot-favorable for hte next few weeks (we're supposed to be dry and 30s all week)
