Hello,
Around June 2016 I started my journey to become a barefoot runner. My feet and the rest of my body thanked me for that! But I was only running and had a few injuries. Was 136 LBS and was not doing much strength. Silly ME! In 2018 experienced posterior tendonitis training for a marathon. In order to recover I used to go to the gym only to jump into the elliptical, Bicycle or any type of cardio. One day I tried to do a pull up and couldn't do it. That was my wake up call. My feet were the only part that was strong enough by then. I started lifting free weights only and now days I am 150Lbs which are basically muscle gains. Used to be 20% body fat and now I am 23.7% which is not biggie since I am 51 and never was this strong. I am capable now to deadlift 200 Lbs and squat 165lbs etc... I stopped running much since I've been focused on building muscle. Of course I still loving running but I am only doing it once a week on my bare feet since I cannot run any other way. The fact is that I had a bunion surgery when I was 21, my left bunion was huge comparing to the right foot. At the gym I normally warm up on the bicycle for a couple of minutes, mobility etc.. and then do my lifts. Anyway, a few months ago I was bored of the bicycle and tried the elliptical wearing my xero sandals. After that I felt some pain on my left big toe. It went away 100% in 2 weeks so I went back to running on concrete as I always do without any issues. I kept going and I tried the treadmill. Again! that left toe! took me another 2 weeks and after that I thought no more machines for me. I stopped having any pain. Since I was curious of what could really happened I made an appointment with my PT. Worth to mentioned that since I started lifting and getting stronger the injuries stopped completely.
Well, the day I went to the PT she did some graston on my Big Toe and ordered an X-Ray I went back 4 days after and the result was this: Irregularity of the first metatarsal head with mild degenerative changes of the first MPT. Suggestion of prior bunionectomy. A small bony ossicle of soft tissue 3 mm medial to the 1rst MPT. Degenerative hyperthropyc changes of the sesamoids of the great toe. Remaining articulations of the foot do not show any arthropathy. Alignment of the forefoot appears adequate. There is a 5 mm osteopathy (bone spur) in the inferior calcaneus. This is 5 mm ostephyte calcaneal insertion of the plantar fascia.
My question to the doctors is? Am I doomed??????
After the 2nd appointment the doctor did more graston on my Big toe and I am having pains I did not! I always remember Dr Mark Cucuzzella and how he beat his arthiris on his toes or Ken Bob when he nroke his 5th metatarsal and the X-Ray found arthritis on his Big toe also and regardless that hasn't stopped him running.
I am not having that ache all the time and haven't run in 10 days. I have done all the feet exercises we should do and I work diligently on my body to attack any weak areas. My glutes are like rocks this days since they must be functional, I am too careful with my form and my runs even when no more than 6 miles are every time enjoyable and rewarding.
Please help!!!!!!!! It is so hard to find information when we are barefoot runners
