  1. This is an interesting topic....barefoot versus shod, what's worse?

Interesting discussion. Threads that are open to "opinion" commenting are bound to contain bias and have no scientific merit. As mentioned numerous times here, individuals who have a vocation that subscribes to a certain paradigm want to justify their beliefs/assumptions (even if they are not...
  2. Hey From New Mexico

I'm working through the excuses. I'm running barefoot in the dark with a headlight. I'm trying not to think about the cold--yet. HaHa! (cold) Out of mind, out of body! That's good advice--especially for someone who really competes with himself. I try to "listen to my body." I really...
  3. Stiff After Races? How and Why?

Definitely training and experience. My "intuitive" thought about barefoot/min running reducing DOMS after races is also a matter of running form. Barefoot running requires more relaxed, springy legs; which improves running efficiency and reduces impact forces. When I began running barefoot...
  4. Any San Diego Area Barefoot Hikers?

I'm in the San Bernardino Mountains, and make it down to the Orange County area pretty regularly. I'm planning several backpacking trips this year, and will be hiking almost everyday. I've only met one minimalist hiker/runner where I live, so connecting for a "trail adventure," with fellow...
  5. The Unoffical Official Hiking Thread

That looks like it was an awesome hike! As a High School English Teacher, I appreciate the linguistic process behind your name (at first glance it looks Hawaiian). I'll be checking your blog out more often now that I know about it. Thanks for the link!
  6. Hey From New Mexico

Welcome Refoman! I just finished The Barefoot Running Book as well. I dig how simple and straightforward it is. I struggle with excuses too, although mine usually have to do with cold weather :o Running is such a mental process.
  7. Breathing Technique

Wow! I ran up my usual hill (about 1 mile); which is a rocky fire road. Simply smiling made a huge impact on my mindset. Each time I remembered to smile, it felt like a renewed energy came over my body and I could continue up the hill with less perceived effort. Awareness of my smile while...
  8. Breathing Technique

I regularly practice martial arts on a punching bag ; nose breathing really seemed to help get deep diaphragmatic breaths. I've been focusing on breathing for a while (when I am disciplined); but was not aware that breathing purely through the nose was a common practice. Thanks for the post!
  9. Refused entry to bank. How do I get a letter from the state health dept?

Costco was one of the only places that prohibited me from entering - I know there are safety equipment codes for industrial warehouses; so I don't know if Costco's policies are grounded on anything substantial.
  10. Aloha from California ;)

Thanks for the welcoming comments TJ, RunningPirate (Awesome Screen Name BTW), Phil, and happysongbird :) You all are everywhere on this site!
  11. The Unoffical Official Hiking Thread

Awesome! I love the sign . . . "proper" is so ambiguous :)
  12. Aloha from California ;)

I like "Aloha" because in an online environment, one is in a constant state of Hello and Goodbye; there just isn't a comparable mainland equivalent. I'm in Wrightwood in the San Gabriel Mountains.
  13. Aloha from California ;)

Hi fellow BFers! I am new to this site, but have been following several barefeet websites/books/research for about two years now. I have been a runner from a very young age (about 5 years old) because my parents were. I have shared many of the same experiences associated with the barefeet...
  14. People's reactions when you run

I have been laughing to myself throughout this entire thread :) I have encountered several comments similar to, if not exactly the same as those mentioned here. I regularly get the "you forgot your shoes!" to which I look down at my feet with a surprised expression and exclaim "ohhh, not again!"
