Nice recovery run this morning after the wounded warrior 1/2 Sunday.
I got out at 5:00 am. 77 deg.f 79%rh.
Feet started out a little sore but felt good post run.
I saw some rabbits

We had a break in the storms today - afternoon looked clear so decided to check out the potential duathlon course which I had been meaning to do for a few weeks. When I asked the race director about competing barefoot, he cautioned that the second run was on crushed limestone or something like that. It was a bit over an hour drive away (1 way) so took me a while to finally investigate. I ran just shy of 4 miles to cover the duathlon course. I don't think I'll sign up it was pretty rough. A lot of it was ok, dirt and very fine stone almost like course sand. But there where just too many larger chunks scattered about. I was only averaging 11 minute mile and felt like that was as fast as I could go, and still had an ouchie step about every minute or so. :( I think some barefooters with tougher feet could probably do this no problem, but I think today was the first time THIS YEAR I was off the asphalt. Without trails to practice on I'm just not use to the stones. According to last years results I'd likely be in top 5 for the first run, slightly ahead of middle of the pack on the bike, but at 10+ min/mile on the final 5k run I'd be giving up around 12 minutes  and at the end of the pack. So I'll probably pass on this race and look for another for my first. Still debating though just for the heck of it.

But while I was up that way I stopped on the paved trail on the way back and was testing out a new saddle for my bike. 28 miles in a little over an hour and half. Averaged 18.2 mph heading west, then 17.4 on the return (apparently the wind was blowing opposite of its normal direction). That is the entire trip, I never paused the timer. I'm pretty excited to almost have broken 18mph avg for a round trip that long. 20+seems so far away though (only 2 of the miles of the whole trip did I break 20).

Oh forgot I was going to post a pic of the second run course of the race...

probably doable by those with tougher feet but I just don't look forward to competing on that kind of surface. Though I will be getting lots of off road miles in over the next couple weeks while I'm on vacation so who knows maybe I'll change my mind.

My run Tuesday (3.7mi) will likely be it for me this week. Had my son yesterday and stayed pretty busy, poured rain half the day too. Then I work dayshifts through the end of the week and rarely get enough sleep. Today was especially tough since I wasn't completely turned around from my nightshifts, and only got about 2-3 hours sleep. Trying to run on hardly any sleep usually results in more damage than good IME. And after sitting for 12hrs I'm pretty stiff even if I do get up and do some stairs a few times. Seems bike rides are still doable on less than adequate sleep, anyone else notice that? Maybe its just the feeling of going easier but still traveling further distance fools my mind, IDK. But perhaps I'll throw the bike in the truck over the weekend for after work.

Thursday 6 mile run at 4:45 am.

This morning 8 mile run at 5:00 am temps still in the mid to upper 70 deg. range, humidity above 70% (good for a sweat).
Still seeing lighting bugs and rabbits.
This morning I saw a bat just at daybreak probably getting a last minute meal by a streetlight.

I'd say your doing really well considering your work shifts! Your feet will adapt pretty quickly if you can get some slow runs on the toughest trails but you wont be able to match shod speed most likely...I'd run mid-shod if you can't pre-run the course and if you want to get a good time otherwise just bag it for now or just wing-it barefoot even if you have to go real slow and don't care how fast you finish. Those are 2 different goals...trying to compete against shod runners or completing the distance barefoot...I struggle with this also.
