I seem to have run another barefoot half marathon on last Saturday, in spite of a disappointing two weeks prior with my cold virus re-establishing itself as pleurisy again for a few days, so no running for a week just two weeks before the race, and lots of sleep. I did get in a couple short runs about 5 and 3 days before it, to see how things felt.

This morning I'm off for a short run with a granddaughter in a stroller. Not sure if I'm ready to start training for the previously planned marathon in the fall.

You are definitely an inspiring grandmother! Quite a role model. You go girl!

Yesterday, Monday, I ran barefoot, meandering around the neighborhoods east of my house. At the HS track, I did six laps while listening to a conference call. I also ran around a few blocks during the circuit to tally a total of 4.6 miles. My feet and ankles have reached a point where they feel pretty good afterwards. Stiffness still occurs but is less troublesome. A short icing session seems to be helpful too.

Yes I to am often shocked at how our bodies can recover.

I don't think I can emphasize enough how much my husband encourages me and helps me problem solve. I wish everyone had this kind of encourager in their lives.

I worked hard at the yoga class this monday
was thinking to run 12 km on tuesday, but hips and achilles were so tired they said enough after 5 km...

it's a good idea to mix yoga and running
but trying to give your best at both maybe not :)

Wednesday - 6.75 miles in Luna's because I discovered on my 3 mile run Tuesday that my soles are too touchy still post half marathon.

Thursday - fast barefoot 2 miles walking the dog. She seems to think she got too old to run, and I was going to run later, but only got to riding the spin bike for 60 minutes.

An hour run. Mileage don't know, don't care. Out of town and got to do some hills, as compared to flat Florida.

Like the attitude running for time not miles!

I was off work this week and had lots of good running:

Sunday - 1+ hour run with a couple Georgia BRS runners then a 25 minute tempo run.

Tuesday - 2.5 hour aerobic trail run

Thursday - 1.5 hour park pavement easy pace with a min-shod runner friend then 1.5 hour mixed speed park pavement run. Ran right by a deer not more than 10 feet away and it didn't even seem to care.

Friday - 1+ hour easy flat trail run

sunday: trail run, about an hour
monday: trail run, about the same
tuesday: short run around the neighborhood, a little bit at the gym
wednesday: walking to the stores to shop. a few miles.
thursday: short run around the neighborhood, a little bit at the gym
friday: fantastic new trails found about30 miles away at a state park. I'm guessing something like 8+ miles of combined hiking/running, exploring. There are many very secluded backpack-in campsites.
saturday: the usual trail run, a little bit at the gym.

Well my last two weeks had disappointingly large gaps of over half the week of non activity. Was hoping to put an end to that quickly but its snow balling and this week a big fat goose egg so far. 7 days in a row and no runs or bikes. :( Just been too busy, worked a 72 hr week of straight nights. Guess I did some stairs at night but nothing big. Got a 72hr week coming up again too. :dead: This coming week was suppose to be 72, last wasn't - I had to cover 2 extra shifts for someone that was out sick. Maybe I'll get a run in later. Got to get back at it, I had such a good comeback after the Spring thaw. No marathon plans this year but wanted to actually push harder for an 18.12 mile race in August (was hoping with my recent improvements that I could hold my 1/2 marathon pace for that distance). That's nearly down to 2 months remaining now! Got to spend a couple hours doing insulation in the attic before it gets to hot today, then I need to spend about 4 hours mowing (tractor has been broke for 2+ weeks, grass is getting crazy!), then I got to figure out how to get a 740# pallet out of my truck, tractor with loader is broke down, hoist in garage is only good for 500#... envisioning putting engine lift on back of a trailer... well anyway I'm going to be very busy!

Friday morning I ran barefoot 6.9 miles from home and walked another 0.8 for coffee before getting home. The outer edge of my right forefoot was still a bit sore from Monday's run but I pushed through it. Can you bruise your sole from running?

When it comes to barefoot running I think just about anything is possible. No matter how hard we try to convert later in life I don't think most of our feet will ever be as strong and durable as if we were barefoot from childhood. I've bruised around the outer edges (contact point mind you, I touch down with the outside edge towards the forefoot) before, but that was trying to run fast in minimalist shoes actually. I think with the added layer I couldn't feel how hard I was hitting. Yours might be different. I also seem to get some pains between a couple metatarsals when they move too much independent of each other occasionally.

Did some sprinkler racing at dawn!

Ah, sprinkler racing! The sprinklers for the path I run on frequently are set to run during prime morning walking and running hours. Some days I can't decide if it is more funny or obnoxious! But it helps me break up my stride and get in some fartleks.

I didn't have any trouble with that the first 3 years of barefoot running, then this last year it has been more of a problem. I have tried to balance making sure I am running lightly with sometimes running in my Lunas to let it heal. Then, I got sick and couldn't run at all for a week and it finally seems to be all the way better, even after running my recent half marathon that was on a lot of rough asphalt. I asked about it on this thread before I got sick: http://thebarefootrunners.org/threa...nd-how-do-you-deal-with-it.18269/#post-172027

Friday - another 6 miles in my Luna's
Saturday - 4 miles barefoot in the morning to test my soles and they did well. Later in the day a lovely 20 minutes of swimming in the sunshine.
Sunday - theoretically a rest day, but lots of squats pulling little weeds, plus I am going to get in some pool time in this hot weather.

Mild Running Dilemma - While I want to keep slowly upping my mileage, I find I am not inspired to commit to training for the marathon again in the fall. I am trying to weigh how disappointed I will be if I don't do it with how relieved I will be to just build up mileage and maybe do one in another year from a stronger base. I think it is a combination of getting sick just before this half and last fall having been so stressful that is making me think of backing off of the longer "racing" for now. I feel pretty good about the idea of just doing another half in the fall. That actually sounds fun.
