This is a loop trail I ran a few weekends ago. It begins at the Mount Elden Lookout Trailhead. It is 2.5 miles to the mountains lookout towers on steep, rocky trail. Some points are large rocks littering the trails and others it is just small pebbles. This portion of the run is enjoyable and not hard on the pads. After this, you drop back along the ridge and run it East for about 1.5 miles. Knuckle sized rocks are spread along the ridge but are not to harsh, ecspecially in the fall when Aspen leaves provide a nice landing surface. You will see 2 large rock pillars off to the right and a rocky red trail winding down the mountain. This is Heart Trail. From here to fatmans loop (a side route of the lookout trailhead) is about 4 miles. The trail is either rough dirt or sharp, palm sized rocks. These are hard on the pressure points and if it is hot, can be harsh on the pads. You will meet up with fatmans loop after heading west for a while. The last .6 miles on fatmans is just like the beginning miles but my feet were much more sensitive due to the wear of Heart Trail. A very challenging run that is great, especially on hot days, to temper and train the skin.
