I wonder if I was in his position, minus the smoking and all, if I would consider amputation. The prostethics/prosthesis these days are much better, and it would end his suffering in so many ways, of course not all. At least he would be able to run and walk with less pain, possibly?

TJ, honestly that's been a bit of dark humor in our friend circle- we all think he'd look good with some of those bouncy running prosthetics. Seriously though, I think the thought of losing the foot (or feet) terrifies him, and I can see why. No one wants to lose a body part.

For your interest, here is an x-ray of one of his feet after his first surgery (where they removed part of the Metatarsal-phalangeal joint but before the second surgery when the first metatarsal was removed.)

Okay, here's my uglies from MN surgery, thanks to shoes, so I'm not real sure they belong here, but they are gross:

Before pictures. Note the spacing between the 2nd and 3rd toes due to the neuromas spreading the mettys apart.

No. Pooh. They sent them off to pathology to have them checked for bad stuff, I guess. I think they just do that, so they get a kickback for the referral. There's very little chance anything was actually life threatening with them.

Hope your healing is quick... being off your feet is no fun at all. In the mean time, you can always manage a barefoot running website :)

Thank you. Yes, that's kinda what has pulled me through, the BRS club, but I'm tired. I want to get out there and start covering the miles again...bare! I can only live through you all and your exploits for so long. :(

My uncle had MRSA in his leg, not his own fault, but it is a truly horrible infection.

He was a struck driver and was unloading his wagon when he was run over by a forklift truck. He was very lucky to keep his foot though as soemone straightened his ankle for him. His lower leg was rather mangled though requiring pins/plates etc and lots of skin grafts taken from his thighs. He ended up with MRSA and one wound that wouldn't heal. The thinned skin on his thighs was then very UV sensitive and he could no longer wear shorts.

The worst part was the company decided to dispute responsibility for the accident. He eventually got an interim settlement, and had a very good barrister who told him to stick to his guns, and eventually accepted 95% liabiility by the company on the steps of the courthouse. Actually, that's not the worst part. The worst part was that he had a great holiday planned, cruise to the States etc, but died of a heart attacke about two weeks before final payment came through.

I don't have any pictures of this, but I wish I did, to show some of my clients. I still tell them the story though.
