Brafree Running II, or WWCD (what would cavewoman do?)

Yes, and judging by the numbers of guys sporting "skinny" jeans in my youthful hipster neighborhood, they have definitely figured that out!

I'll add a couple of things

I'll add a couple of things here. One, all the muscle in the world under my breasts won't help the "golfball in a sock" from breast feeding 2 kids for 18 months each, LOL.

I read in an anthropology book that human breasts increased to counter flatter faces. In chimps, gorillas, etc. the infant's lower face protrudes so there is no need for the nipple to be out from the chest. Humans, on the other hand have relatively flat faces so if the breast didn't protrude, the infant would smother or just not be able to suckle.

I think it is kind of funny that our culture considers breasts so sexual. It makes it tough to breast feed. I had a friend actually yelled at in public for feeding her baby (they were in a discreet corner of an airport, fully drapped and not showing anything inappropriate.) My mom has a friend that never wore a bra. She is in her 60's now and could use her bra hold up her pants.

 Wow, we've gotten into some

Wow, we've gotten into some deep territory here: eroticization (the cultural process of labeling parts as sexual), sexual selection (one of the most powerful forces in the evolution of animals), and the ascendency of geek sexiness (no fancy word for that yet).

It's hard to know how much evolutionary forces are still working among humanity, because everything we do is covered in such a thick layer of culture. There is so much coded signalling about sexuality and status going on (like with the skinny jeans, to name just one of a billion examples), and it's become completely disconnected from actual reproduction. Humans are a completely bizarre species in this sense. Many high-status humans actually decide consciously NOT to have more kids.

Still, I strongly feel that there is a lot of primitive, non-culturally dictated, behavior going on, at least on the level of basic impulses, which thinking and culture later squash -- but not completely.

Men (generalizing here) tend to be attracted to really young, really healthy women. An older guy may not act on his attraction to a 16-year old (that damn stupid culture stopped him) but the impulse is there. Survey the vast sea of porn and you'll see the preponderance of really young women.

Similarly women (generalizing here) have a very elemental attraction to bad boys, yeah, ones that are going to lie and cheat and who are capable of violence. A classic come-on from my single days, which I should have used more because it totally worked: "I don't think we should get together. I'm just going to cheat on you." (Which in my case, sadly, was a lie. :) )

Of course most men and women eventually come to their senses and get together with someone who actually offers them a future (like the geek!) but there were moments when biology, more than thinking or culture, was driving their attraction. In those moments we are more like apes from a million years ago, worrying about a healthy mate or protection from predators, than the exotic show-dog kind of species we've become today.

I think it's fun to feel the primitive foundation of our existence. The other day I was doing this adventure race and wound up running in a silent pack with 3 or 4 others through some really challenging trails and brush, for at least half an hour. It felt completely familiar to me, like I had done this in another life. (Hunting?) And having minimal shoes was part of that.

On the other hand I love movies and skinny jeans and literary novels and all the rest of this tremendous crust of culture that we've built up on top of our basic biological reality. I wouldn't want to be primitive.

And likewise (to finally get back to the original topic) I don't think I'd want to run without a bra if I had breasts, especially big ones. I ran with a 40-pound water jug in a crosstraining class the other day and the sloshing back and forth of the water was terrible. If having big breasts is anything like that, I say use all the technology you can get your mitts on. :)

Really interesting stuff, Stomper.

In the US today it appears that with the exception of the deeply religous, birthrates for the educated are much lower than the lesser educated.

Whether or not inate intellegence has any correlation with the individual's luck of the draw as to what family they were born into can't really be known, but it would seem as if we are currently selecting for lower inborn intelligence.

Of course an inner city born racial minority child may have a higher I.Q than a rich suburban kid that goes on to graduate from Harvard, but odds are the Harvard grad will have two or less children, while the other will have more that also won't be given the opportunity to thrive intellectualy, impeading his/her chances of economic survival.

Some cultures have dumbed down the gene pool on purpose without realizing it!

For most of the history of Catholicism, the smartest male child in the family was told not to procreate! The Priesthood was his calling, while the "duller" boy in the family ended up siring a whole bunch of kids.

Orthodox Jews throughout the Diaspora as well as the Holy Land did exactly the opposite, as the local community donated funds and services to the Rabbi's family in order for him to have the largest family possible, even though many of the villagers were barely able to feed their own.

Living in a working class suburban area of Detroit, when I'm out running or cycling there seems to be no shortage of large young men driving full-size 4X4 pickups w/ extended cabs.

Every additional accessory or sticker just SCREAMS out primal machismo, as they yell at me to get off the road. I can never imagine them being seen as attractive to anyone other than a wannabe guy just like them, but they do still get the chicks!

Once those "chicks" turn into gals, and then smarten up and morph into young ladies and single moms, maybe then they will be attracted to guys with more potential for providing as well as the ability to supply real companionship.

Whether or not they can make the stretch to settling down with a skinny jeaned movie festival type remains to be seen.

I'm planning on cycling AND running today, hope I don't get hit by any PBR cans!

Please, "don't nobody" cross post this to any NASCAR forums!

OMGosh, Beth! I was going to say, "Don't get him started," but I can see I'm too late.

It's OK now TJ, remember it

It's OK now TJ, remember it rained all day yesterday and then was cool, cloudy, but still humid the first half of today.

Although I biked hard everyday, it's not the same, I had'nt run since Wednesday.

I biked hard again today, but finaly got a run in this afternoon after three days off.

I've been re-centered, have mellowed out, and don't need to pontificate on the topic

any more.

Besides, tomorrow Diane will return from Chicago, and I will go back to work.

But you never know what my frame of mind will be the NEXT time something like this comes up!

Oh, so that's it... DIANE is away! Girls, from now on, when Diane is away, and Board will tell us when that is so, we don't post about "girly" things. Do I hear a second...?

Yeah, last week she was visiting her Mom in FL, this weekend it was our newlywed daughter in Chicago. I'll calm down soon. So will she, school starts back for her next week, no kids in the classroom yet, but back to work just the same.

Speaking of her Mom and our newlywed daughter.......as long as we still have that "other" site to help us out....ever see LB in a REAL tux on Memorial Day 2010?

She sure did'nt get them from her bio-dad, pictured next to me here at the dinner two nights before the wedding.

Never asked daughter about a shoe rule at the inlaw's house, just did it.
