„Freistart beim 24-Stunden-Lauf in München möglich!“,

Barfußläufer => Party

tofu lernt was übers Knie beugen oder Zehen heben

Chelsea translated this report into English:

„Free race entry for the 24-hour Run in Munich!”
was Barefoot Mecki’s call to barefoot runners on Facebook and in the BRS forum. He’d gotten wind of an opportunity for a team to participate in the run “on the house” (read: all expenses paid by the race organizers). The condition: just be interesting and/or entertaining enough. Mecki had figured that a group of barefoot runners might be just what the race organizers were looking for, so less than three weeks before the race, he decided to apply for the slot with a team that didn’t even actually exist yet. The organizers had only planned on inviting one such team and the slot had already been filled by the CaBaNauTeN (a crazy group of runners that run all sorts of races for various good causes), but a team made up of purely shoeless runners apparently seemed too good for the organizers to pass up. A second slot was made available and the barefoot runners were on board.

After a few days and more than a few reluctant replies, it seemed that Mecki may have been a little too optimistic in his planning. But then unexpectedly things began to look up. The messages started coming in: „I changed my flight.” “It turns out I can get the day off.” “My mother in law can take the kids.” “If you’re all coming, then I’m coming, too!” And all at once there were 10 runners from the BRS on board. At this point most of us only knew each other through the internet so no one really knew quite what to expect, but nevertheless there was a definite sense of anticipation and excitement in the virtual air.

The Race
For the second year in a row the 24-hour race was held on the historic grounds of the 1972 Olympic Games. Forty years later, the beautifully green and hilly park, the lake, and the spectacular architecture continue to impress.

The 3.3km circuit ran though the heart of the Olympic Park with a quick detour through the “BMW World.” The raw asphalt bike paths through the park were rather uncomfortable to run on. The BMW World provided wonderful relief with its smooth, cool floors, and it provided a great backdrop for pictures, especially at night. During the day, however, the challenge became navigating a path through the masses of distracted car-ooglers who seemed to be of the common opinion that the best vantage point for oogling and picture-taking was the middle of the race course.

With the exception of Barefoot Mecki and Jesko, no one in our team had ever participated in a 24-hour run before, and no one had ever done one as a relay. When only one runner out of 15 is allowed to race at once, most of the time is spent waiting. Although we’d all agreed beforehand that our main goals were to have fun and to provide a bit of party-atmosphere, there was still a part of us that wanted to compete. It was hard not to with some of the runners bringing in times beginning with 11, 12 and 13 minutes (one guy with a 10!). With such a quick pace, it’s quite a workout: wait – wait – wait – RUN! – repeat… Not exactly what you’d consider fulfilling running, unless of course you’re a top-notch sprinter.

  6. rrunner64 (still barefoot) receives the baton from joohneschuh (in minshoes) and gets going
Through the night
The night brought with it an atmosphere of its own. As the race continued on and on, more than a moment’s sleep was hardly possible. The solo runners grew tired as the music coming from the stage blared on into the darkness. As the spectators vanished, the commentators decided to take a break and save their energy for the long day awaiting them.

Horray for Pumuckl!
A major highlight of the race was getting to run with the legendary Dietmar „Pumuckl“ Mücke (here’s a link to his Homepage and, for the international readers, the real kobold). Barefoot and in costume, in his 24 hours as a solo runner, he conquered the raw earth with an astounding 129km! And this all while taking plenty of time to talk, drink beer, flirt, assist the commentators…and then get up and run another fast lap (with a top time of 13:30!). He visibly enjoyed his time with us barefooters, completed several laps with our runners, and visited our camp while taking breaks.

Making waves outside the BRS
Our participation in the race caught the attention of barefooters outside of the BRS as well.

Martl, who has hiked the Alps barefoot and now speaks about his experiences, wanted to participate and was able to squeeze four laps into his busy schedule. He even provided some yummy food at the start and a crate of beer for the finish! Awesome! We also had lots of fun with his barefooted children, who spent their time scurrying around happily from one runner to the next.
(Picture: Martl taking off)

Martin works as the head of a multiple sclerosis research center, and as both a runner and a researcher, became interested in barefoot running after reading “Born to Run” and the Lieberman study. He changed his running style and spent time developing a type of forefoot sandal, which won a design prize. He and a team of students contacted us shortly before the race and asked us to participate in a study they are conducting. Using high-definition acceleration sensors originally developed to track the body movement of MS patients, they were able to track every runner from our barefoot team as well as from another team of shod runners to compare results. These tiny sensors can supposedly measure the same forces that Lieberman painstakingly measured with his pressure discs in a lab, and all you have to do is strap the actibelt on and go. It’s definitely a fascinating research approach and we hope that some good will come out of it! Martin started the race for us with four fast laps in his hot and heelless sandals.
(Picture: Martin running in his “runningpads”)

Axel is a talented podiatrist as well as barefoot runner from Munich who somehow found out about our group and showed up to run and to offer individual foot analyses for those who were interested. We were able to substitute him last-minute for Michele, who wasn’t quite able to make it back from his Everest Marathon on time.
(Picture: Axel cheering; he ran four laps and was able to help more than a few runners fix their crooked feet)

Despite lack of ample training, BornForNoLimits let susafras talk him into running barefoot with us. Not the greatest idea in the world, although we didn’t know it until the damage – a few decent blisters – was done. Still, it didn’t stop him from running a second leg in his FiveFingers with a not-too-shabby time! The huge pot of tomato soup he brought proved to be another highlight of the race. Hopefully he’ll stay true to his self-given nickname and not let one minor setback keep him from future barefoot running. After all, he did register in the BRS forum just a few short days before the race!
(Picture: BornForNoLimits on the road to Blisterville)

Barefoot Running => Party
Last but not least, there’s Markus, who has only ever run in shoes and kept them on during the race, but decided to run with us anyway because apparently we were just crazy enough. He has a penchant for outlandish sporting events, as you can tell by his re-telling of his experience at the Braveheart-Battle: “I literally had tears in my eyes at the finish because I just couldn’t go any more. It was awesome.” After long hours of waiting, boredom had borne its fruits and given Jesko a rather unconventional idea, and of course it was Markus who went along with it: backwards running. The two decided to run an entire lap together backwards and spent the half an hour cheering and being cheered on by others.

Mecki was able to use his coaching talents to help out team members, as well as coaxing curious runners from other teams to try out barefoot running for the first time. Lots of fun!
(Picture: tofu learning about bending knees and lifting toes)

Without a doubt, the members of the Barefoot Runners Team were there for the party, cheering for other runners, dancing on the stage, and just generally hooligan-ing around. Because of it, more than a few stiff athletes were able to smile and forget the monotony of lap-counting for a while. One of the commentators was entertained enough that he began asking all about minimalist running and then repeating the answers for all to hear. We couldn’t have asked for better advertising! In the end, he even took off his own shoes and finished the day barefoot.

We got major kudos from the race organizers for enhancing their event. Thanks for the invitation! We all had so much fun!

The very best part was finally getting to meet all of you in person! You’re great! We’re doing something like this again soon!

Thank you, Jo! I look forward to reading her report. No pictures necessary. We will just add the text below the original. I made a permanent redirect, so people can access the article from where you originally placed it as well as here.

I am so proud of all of you. I so wish I could have been there. That would have been a blast! You all represented the BRS exceptionally. And I appreciate it.

Ah, sweet. Thank you.

This time in English... :)

„Free race entry for the 24-hour Run in Munich!” ... The very best part was finally getting to meet all of you in person! You’re great! We’re doing something like this again soon!

Yes Jo, we most certainly will! :D :D :D

(edited for brevity by the Mod Squad ;) )

Thank you, Chelsea!

wow oh wow oh wow! You two did a RUNTASTIC job writing this up! Joe, you're amazing, thank you so much for your work! Chelsea, I already thanked you for taking over the translation duties, but now I see the whole article and I'm just floored by your effort. I'd need a week to do that!

And, hey, that event was amazing - and I'm really really really hoping we can do it again next year. I'm sure we wouldn't be invited as guests, but I'd pay my way happily :D

(writing from the hospital room, finally got the laptop and wifi - will hopefully be going home tomorrow!)

I've "almost" secured three pairs of the Freeheel Running Pads as mentioned in the report above from Starringer. Check out this new, innovative product here: http://www.runningpad.de

I have spoken with the owner of this company, and they are willing to give us three pairs to try out and report back on as well as post in our Product Reviews forum, our Gear & Footwear forum, our Facebook page, and I'm thinking I will throw in the home page as well, since this is such a cool and unique footwear product. Now, normally I would refuse to be one of those who receives free products from merchandisers because of my position here, and I always let you, the members, have the opportunity to win these products, but this time, I hope you all don't mind, I'd like to be one of the three to receive a pair. I think these might allow me to "get outside" and give me enough protection in the forefoot that I now find I need after the MN surgeries. Of course, I would rather go barefoot (God knows how I long to.), but my nerves are still very sensitive and very damaged due to the pre/post MN. The new VFFs, I am finding, will only let me wear them for about 20 minutes before I have to take them off because they mess with my toes and cause pain, and my huaraches are a bit too thin (as was intentionally designed and what we all love here), so I feel lots of sensations in my forefoot (don't dare step on anything), and my water shoes enclose my toes causing pain as well. Anyway, if no one has any protests about my being one of the recipients, I would love to be one of the "winners."

Stay tuned for more details...

Thanks, Chris!
