  1. Eating on the run

I'm beginning to run longer distances more frequently now, with a run in the range of 1 1/2 or 2 hours every week or so. And I'm finding that I really need to eat something. I want to avoid gels and sports drinks and eat real food if possible, and I need a way to carry it. I'm...
  2. Snow Running

Were you doing that in your bare feet? If so, did they go numb over the course of 3 miles? In snow, I wear my moccasins and wool socks. And yes, it's definitely a lot harder ...
  3. The Grass Illusion

Clearly defined surfaces are easy, and allow you to run gracefully without a lot of thought. But I really like single track paths through the woods, where I have to concentrate and my eyes and feet and mind are all working together, tuning out the conscious mind and just letting them figure it...
  4. do you consider boys going barefoot more uglier than girls going barefoot?

I'm not taking a position on the feet, but from the ankle on up, I do find girls prettier ;->
  5. Holy Cucuzzella, thanks a million!!

I can see that my cadence is way too slow. My posture seems to be about right, I'm more or less using the right muscles, but I sure don't look as good as he does. For those who have used this video, how do you translate watching the video into the way you run? And if this is an "oldie but...
  6. Holy Cucuzzella, thanks a million!!

He seems to be talking about this video:
  7. Half marathon training - modified Hal Higdon?

I'm definitely finding the Intermediate program too much, taking a few days off running (sigh) now that I'm hitting weeks 6-7. I'm going to pull back to Novice 2 http://www.halhigdon.com/training/51312/Half-Marathon-Novice-2-Training-Program or maybe even Novice 1...
  8. Half marathon training - modified Hal Higdon?

I'm definitely with you on the "not injured" part. I don't have a good enough feeling for what my time goals should be. I've only run one race, a 5K, which I finished in 26:14. I've looked a the results of a race calculator to extrapolate, but I have no idea how useful this is as a predictor...
  9. Greetings from Durham, NC

I have been running barefoot for 3 years now, and I'm familiar with both kinds of injuries ;-> Full disclosure: I broke my foot on a sharp hidden stump a little over a year ago, and was out of the game for quite a while last year.
  10. Greetings from Durham, NC

Sure - let me know when you are in Durham.
  11. How do you treat (or cure) plantar faciiatis?

Another common treatment: freeze water in a water bottle or Gatorade bottle, use it to massage the bottom of your foot for 20 minutes at a time, 3 times a day if it's bad. Whatever you do, don't mess around with this. There are people who have to stop running for 10 months to a year because...
  12. Half marathon training - modified Hal Higdon?

What do you mean by "master that"?
  13. Half marathon training - modified Hal Higdon?

I've done one 5K, had planned on running at least a 5K and a 10K on my way to the half, and I'm definitely leaving August-October for any needed "adjustments". I'm no longer a strict MAF guy, but I am usually running slow and easy for any runs over 40 minutes, except for the buildup phase of...
  14. Half marathon training - modified Hal Higdon?

While I really want to get stronger, avoiding injury is even more important. Here are the variables I'm looking at and some questions about each one. * In the novice plans, Higdon doesn't recommend any intervals or tempo runs. For the 1/2 marathon, he recommends them in the intermediate and...
  15. How do you treat (or cure) plantar faciiatis?

+1 on walking backwards. I also find mowing the grass with an Austrian scythe, barefoot, works great. And no, I'm not kidding, it gently rocks your feet in a way that I find helpful for my plantar fascia and ankles. Check out Youtube videos.
  16. Greetings from Durham, NC

I live in Durham, North Carolina, and run about 1/2 on trails and 1/2 on roads. I've been doing most of this at a leisurely pace, my longest runs are currently 8-10 miles, but I am now doing a little more systematic training and plan to run a 1/2 marathon some time this fall. Before I started...
  17. What does your screen name mean?

Bootstrap - because I'm a computer guy (bootstrapping has a technical meaning) and a hiker (my boots have straps in the back to pull them on). Also because I'm always trying to figure things out from the beginning (related to the computer concept), and to pull myself up by my bootstraps. It...
  18. Sneaking out of the hotel

And by the way, the Strip wasn't all *that* dirty, I had to wash my feet, but I usually do after a run. There was some broken glass here and there, but not much. And there's something surreal and fun about running past all that pretense in the light of the new morning. People walking by kept...
