Are varifocals safe to run with

I'm an MD, but not an ophtalmologist... But at least I'm an 'experiental expert' (google translate doesn'tt know an English word for the Dutch 'ervaringsdeskundige' - someone who gained expertise through experience), since I'm wearing varifocals since about three years, so I guess I can...

    51 y/o first day barefooted

Welcome... I'm 53 y.o., and I can't stress enough the importance of transitioning slowly, slowly... (Did I say to do it slowly?) I used to run barefoot or in minimalist shoes until about two and a half years ago. Last spring, I decided to start running again, and thought it would be no problem...

    Alternative (traditional) footwear

I have been thinking about espadrilles too... I seem to remember that you live in the 'Randstad', so not too far from the Dutch coast... I know that here in Belgium it's rather easy to find a pair of espadrilles (not the laced ones) in tourist places near the coast. Although now, with winter...

    Winter Challenge - 2012

I totally agree... Until now, I've got only one run that qualified... Today the weather wasn't great: wind, rain, rain, and more rain. But even with windchill it was still 7°C. Nevertheless... It was my first run on totally wet streets that I could enjoy, and my feet felt comfortably warm.

    Pets

Our cats are two of a kind that can’t live with and can’t live without each other… When one comes inside, the other follows in only minutes, and when one goes out, the other starts feeling uneasy. But they can fight! and they often chase each other until one of them sits meters high in a tree…...

Getting used to the cold and the rain?

It’s really autumn here, the weather is exactly like you’d expect it to be in Belgium by the first week of november: lots of rain, and even a bit colder than average (today 9°C, feeling like 7°C because of the wind). (OK, for those Canadians that may sound hot as hell...) It started raining in...

    Other barefoot communities?

I'm Ann-V on RunningAhead.com, the site where I keep my running log. I try to point people who ask about barefoot running to this site here. AnneTanne on DailyMile and about everywhere else (but often in Dutch)...

How do you all pick your routes?

I live near a canal with a beautiful towpath along it, and I often run along that path. To the south, the pavement is rather smooth asphalt, to the north it is quite rough chip seal. To reach the tow path, I have to go about 500 m, which is 200 m of velvety smooth concrete, than 100 m of rough...

Grand Canyon - Rim to River to Rim

I enjoyed reading this... We visited the Grand Canyon last summer, but since we had only (part of) a day, we only walked/hiked half of the rim trail. However, we decided to come back to the States 'once', and instead of visiting (much too shortly) many parks, spending more time in only one or...

    First MAF run

I know... But I also know, that with Maffetones method, I'm able to run consistently, and not to have to abandon all running after I have overdone... again...

    First MAF run

Robbi, After about six months of running at MAF (126 for me), my pace in the first km of a MAF-test starts to approach 8:20, so I don't think I would consider your running ridiculous. On my first MAF-test, my speed averaged around 11:00 min/km, but I saw a very steady decrease, and now, after...

Solved What happened to the (contents of the) Belgian chapter?

This morning, I tried to go to the 'Chapters', and discovered the recent changes. However, it seems that those changes have gone a bit too far: I understand that when I click on 'Chapters', I go directly to the Belgian Chapter, the only one I'm a member of, but what has happened to all the...

    Invisible Shoes Experience

I have the 4 mm, but haven't ran in them yet. I walk in them the first 500 m of my training runs, when I have to cross a very rough section. The floppiness is a problem in my left shoe, where I made the hole between the toes not quite in the right place, it should have been just 1/8 inch...

Dinner Conversation with Five Year Old

Our son's food top-3 consists of Asparagus, Brussels' sprouts and Belgian endives...(He has a bit of a bitter taste, hasn't he?) When we eat fries more often than once in a fortnight, he's complaining that 'it's always French fries over here!' (However, twice a day pasta isn't a problem at all.)

    Lost My Virginity Today

I was about two weeks into barefoot running, when a little hawthorn pruning with a nasty thorn decided to position itself just where I would step upon it. It was only hours later that it really started hurting, long after the thorn was gone...

    Winter Challenge - 2012

'Below 5°C', does that mean: '5° and less', or '4.99° and less' ;)? About 2,5 months after starting my transitioning to barefoot running, I had a (short) run today at 5°C, and I really feel a barefoot runner now, so I hope this qualifies...

GIVEAWAY!!!! Xero Shoes October Giveaway - Expires Sunday, October 14, at midnight EST

I made the 'between-toes' hole on my left invisible shoe not exactly in the right place. So I would be glad to try another pair that has it's perforations right.
