    Plantar fasciitis, please help!

I'm not a doctor so I don't know if it's appropriate for me to offer some thoughts. But I will anyway. :) I have very flat feet and fought HORRENDOUS PF for a very long time. So at the high level - I've been where you are. (I'll jump to the ending for me: I used to be in rigid orthotics and now...

    Barehead (American) Football

I haven't been here in ages. I hope things are going well for folks. I saw the movie "Concussion" over the weekend. Great movie - and disturbing for an (American) football fan like myself. I started doing some Googling and web surfing to see what was going on in terms of making football...

Squat for lengthening the Achilles, PF, and calf muscles for better barefoot running (with video)

Thanks Angie. I very much appreciate your perspective. As is probably somewhat evident in my post, I too seem to be experiencing the "fact" that stretching is effective. Jim

Squat for lengthening the Achilles, PF, and calf muscles for better barefoot running (with video)

Dr. Charschan: Can you elaborate on your comment above? Are you saying repeated "practice" with the squat, for someone who can't hold the position on their own right now, generally won't improve their ability to get into and hold that position? Or maybe that needs to be combined with...

    Question for the Doc's

The impression in my mind is that Graston tends to be reported as more painful than ASTYM. I haven't had Graston - so what I said isn't based on any personal experience. I would describe ASTYM as "a little uncomfortable" - and it improved with each treatment. Jim

Long Walks with torn Paroneal Tendon with Boot on?

I've worn a boot once and I can't imagine going on walks that long. Just because you can do it doesn't mean it's a good thing. I've heard from both my PT and podiatrist they only use boots when necessary because it can really mess up your hips from the altered gait. My PT knows my...

    Question for the Doc's

Not sure this is worth a whole lot - but I had ASTYM when I had PF and it helped immensely. I know your current problem isn't PF. I'm just saying ASTYM as a treatment I found very beneficial. Hopefully (if that's what they determine would help your situation) it will help for you as well. Jim

Lateral Heel Pain (For Dr. Splichal - kind of.........)

Dry Needling is a muscle treatment for knots/trigger points/tightness. As I understand it trigger points are where a portion of the muscle goes into chronic, localized contraction. They (often?) can be felt - like a knot. An Accupuncture-like needle (maybe it is an actual Accupuncture needle) is...

Lateral Heel Pain (For Dr. Splichal - kind of.........)

I thought I'd post a follow-up: I've been through 3 dry needling sessions and it has made a HUGE difference. My heel pain is almost completely gone. I follow-up and report this because, prior to getting dry needling, I thought my calves were in pretty good shape from a range of motion...

Sharp pain in foot between my inner ankle and heel

Does it hurt more in the morning or after you've been still for a while? If it does - and feels better after things have moved a bit - you might look into Posterior Tibialis Tendonitis. There is a tendon that runs in the area you describe and maybe that is aggravated and inflamed. If this...

Thanks Dr. S. I greatly appreciate it. Jim

Lateral Heel Pain (For Dr. Splichal - kind of.........)

A quick update - I just returned from my Podiatrist. He believes it's Periostitis - an inflammation of the lining of the bone. With the pelvis repositioning he thinks it's further stretching some already tight tissues and that's aggravating the heel. He prescribed Voltaren gel to help calm it...

Lateral Heel Pain (For Dr. Splichal - kind of.........)

Thanks so much for your help. I greatly appreciate it. I don't know when I'll see my PT next - hopefully this week. I'll ask her about degree of delta as well as structural vs functional on the LLD. Below is a picture of me pointing to where the pain is. I presume, unless it's referred, that...

Lateral Heel Pain (For Dr. Splichal - kind of.........)

My bad. I meant Peroneal Tendon. Sorry for the confusion. Given that clarification as well as what you put in your reply does that mean Gastroc fibers might be contributing to it - and also does your initial point also hold true that eccentric strength could play a role in this? As one possible...

Lateral Heel Pain (For Dr. Splichal - kind of.........)

[This is kind of directed to Dr. Splichal because it leverages off of a comment she made in the "PF Confusion" thread - but I'll obviously take anyone's input........] For quite a while I've had a pain on my lateral heel. It's lower than the Post Tib tendon - right where the transition is from...

    Steel Cut Oats?

A quick follow-up: I bought some steel cut oats yesterday. I'd found a suggestion online to soak them in milk - no cooking needed - overnight. I put some in milk in a tupperware container last night and put them in the fridge. This morning = awesome. Soft but chewy. If you're watching...

    Steel Cut Oats?

I was into steel cut oats for a while. I think I found a cooking method that involved, right before bed, bringing a pan of them to a boil, then turning off the stove and putting on a lid and just letting them cool down (and cook) overnight. It was quite convenient. This intrigues me enough I...

    Inflammation in Achilles/Ankle area

My $.02.................................. I agree that braces can promote weakness, however using them temporarily to provide a better healing environment may make a lot of sense. A cast will make your arm weaker if it's worn forever, however if the arm is broken it needs some external support...
