Normaly I just use soap but if they are really dirty I use a sponge like the ones you clean your pots with, the ones with some green plastic-like...

I run approx. 3 times a week about 10 KM. Mostly on sidewalks and some gravel paths along the road.
I was out on my saturday run and the roads had just been salted. Like Bare Lee says it burns like ..... After a shower and about 4 hours it was back...

Also if the roads are wet your feet gets soften from the moisture and hence you will feel any bumps/rocks/gravel even more.
