Most Excellent 5 mile run at 5:00 am.
Nice weather.
Cool moon.
Got in some good flow!!

14 miles Monday went well. Saw some cute and fuzzy little duckies diving madly into the ponds. The regulate spin bike and swim on Tuesday, then 6 miles today on feet that were too tender to be bare and I should have worn some sandals. I believe I will the rest of the week.

The week started with a change in pace. Instead of the typical route around the lake on Monday morning, a route which is quite level once I get down my driveway, I ran barefoot up towards Piedmont on mildly inclined streets. At the nearby high school, I went twice around the track before proceeding uphill again through the streets of Piedmont. Most of the neighborhoods up there were new to me. Tracing a large loop back down to my neighborhood clicked in at 5.73 miles according to my iPhone. Not bad.

A great 5 mile barefoot run to work on a beautiful morning followed by a strenuous 3 hours repairing a 2 acre community garden damaged by Superstorm Sandy. That, when combined with the weekend I spent logging, splitting and stacking 3 full cords of wood for my sister probably concludes the cross-training for the next little while :)

This week has been a mix of good and bad for me. And I have a 10k race tomorrow so I hope the week ends on the good side rather than bad! But unfortunately there is a chance of rain... hope it holds off.

So lets see, Monday I did my first duathlon training. I haven't fully committed yet, but there is a duathlon in July that I was debating on trying. I've done many run & bike combos, but just casually. This time I set out to do it quickly and similar to duathlon, with the exception of a warmup and cooldown which were each about 1/2 to a mile of walking and slow run. The first leg was a 2 mile run, and my splits were 7:22 and 6:40. Then with only a pause to gulp down some water I hopped on the bike and did 10 miles. Unfortunately my Endomondo app on the phone kicked me out of the workout somehow and didn't save any of the info except for 2.9mi for some reason. So not sure how fast I went. I was really upset since this was going to be the baseline to see how I progress. Oh well. Then again I immediately parked the bike and took off running again for 5k. Definitely felt much slower! But still splits weren't too bad... 7:45, 7:33, 7:27.

Tuesday I went on a splendid trip up to the Holmes County Trail, through Ohio's Amish country. Biked around 18 miles, checking out the trail for my 10k tomorrow. Took some pics:

But disaster struck on my adventure! For the first time in many years I crashed. Luckily I wasn't going very fast but still, hitting asphalt hurts! I hit with the left side of body, shoulder took the brunt but the whole left side got nailed... road rash and bruising on shoulder, elbow, hip, knee, and actually 5 spots on the foot. Of course this happens at the turn around point - furthest from the trailhead. Bike was mostly alright, my shoulder broke its fall. Just a very light scuff on the saddle and skewed the handlebars slightly to one side but still close enough to get back. I walked it off, and seemed to be good enough to go so headed back. Still stopped for several pics, pinky toe bleeding and all.

Wednesday I planned to run but decided to take a day off to let the injuries heal, though I decided later in the evening to hop on the bike for a few miles just to stretch out the legs (and I was a bit shy at first lol).

Thursday, still a bit sore, but decided I better make sure I can run ok for this race. Did 6 miles at moderate pace. Yeah, I can do it but not 100%. Some tightness in the foot, and shoulder and hip a bit sore still with the road rash still causing a little bit of pain as the shirt touches and moves on it. Hope its not so bad that it will affect my gate and cause some imbalances. Today I'll just be working around the house, perhaps finally planting a few things in the garden and mowing the lawn. Will try to get some walking in or maybe a short run.

Hmmm, lets see:

Sunday: around the neighborhood before the rain hit.
Monday: trail, st at the gym later
Tuesday: all day job interview. slow hike in the evening, then I passed out at about 7:30pm for the rest of the night. All day interview, I guess.
Wed: trail, then st at the gym later. Evening walk.
Th: it rained all day. gym late afternoon.
Fri: trail

Update. Got home after finishing my run and saw that there was blood splattered all over my other foot, that I had missed while bandaging my injure toe. Nice!

I stubbed my right toe 2 weeks ago and now it's good. I was worried that I might re-injure it again due to my clumsiness, but it's been fine.

Now, it's the left. Funny thing is that I would stub the left toe once on each run. Got off lucky until today. Perhaps after limping around for a week, maybe my "muscle memory" will prevent it from happening again?
Toes crossed! :D Ouch!

3km this morning back with my running partner.
Took a different route today -not too bad a surface.

Passed by a shod runner & exchanged hello's. He added -"you alright there in your feet?..."
For a brief moment made me realise I'd completely forgotten that I was running barefoot & therefore might look slightly odd to some folk! Perhaps I'm learning to truly relax at last...

Sid: -sounds painful (not to mention messy!). Hope it heals soon.

Saturday: late afternoon run laps around the park, lots of stops to check on kids while my daughter tried out her new roller blades.
Evening: a little st at the gym, then a walk around the nearby park while my family members (who are not allergic) finished their swim.

Puddle jumpin again this morning.
Waited till the storm stopped and had a smooth 10 mile run at 9:45 am (another daylight run).
All the cool creek crossings were full (almost overfull of water).
70 deg. f., 83 % rh
Really enjoyed this outing!!

I have stubbed my toes before (I always say it is when I dose off)(it does make a mess) .
Sometimes a fine line between flow and loss of attention (for me).
