Hello everyone,

After a really frustrated period I am seeking advice. The spring has arrived, and running is upon me again. I have not managed to run much throughout the winter, but in mid march I started again. Things felt good and I managed to up my mileage (I was running with vivo trail freaks). Over two weeks I ran around 50km. In the easter week I was at a cabin with family, and I also did some runs there. (Quite some downhills). This is now around 3 weeks ago.
After the downhill running, i felt pain in my right knee. I even feel it when i walk down stairs. I waited around 3 days, and I didnt feel it when walking anymore. I started going barefoot and warming up by walking barefoot uphill, then ran few hundred metres before switching my shoes back on. Problem is that after some 300 - 500 metres I get the pain back in my knee. This continuosly happens over and over again. I rest 3-4 days, and I can maybe run 1 km, but then the pain arrives.

Throughout the period I have re-read some of my books. (Ken Bob's barefoot running step by step)
Multiple times I have thought I have found the error in my running style;
- Posture
- Arm movement
- Over striding
- To low cadence
- ...

So today, I went out for a run again, warmed up 20-30 minutes walking, then started running. I small ascend first, which felt ok. I then arrived at little descend, which made me start the twitching. A little more and the pain is back. It feels as if it is on the outside on the right side of the knee.

As might be understood from this post, I am a bit frustrated. I don't even understand what I am doing wrong, although I am pretty sure posture and overstriding is part of it. I also think I might be running uneven now because of the knee (Subconscious change).

Do anyone have any tips for me for how to proceed? I have looked up natural running centres around me, but nothing in Norway that I have found.

I really want this natural running style to work for me, I can go all day long at work just waiting to get home so I can get out.

So, is it supposed to be so hard to get a correct running form? Any advice is highly appreciated. Maybe someone has experienced similar things and found a way through?

Sounds like a case of ITBS (iliotibial band friction syndrome) Lots of information on the internet about this stuff, and some things to help you with it. I had a bad case of it some years ago and bought a roller and did some stretching exercises. The main cause of this is one leg is stronger than the other. You might have one knee that possibly buckles in.

On downhills it's tempting to lean back into them to slow or stable yourself, this can locks out the knees and cause undue stress on them.
My solution has always been to lean forward slightly on the downslope, then increase my cadence to remain in control of the decent. If the hill is too steep to do that then i'll zig zag in a very shallow curve.
On a very, very steep decent i'll angle myself sideways and bend my knees a lot to counteract the forces.
Keep it simple and relax has always been my mantra, you can't relax if you're trying to remember a million and one things about form. Trust your intuition, if something doesn't feel right chances are it's not.
I've ran a lot of hills for many years and even now if a downhill doesn't feel right, the terrain is dodgy or i feel tired i'm happy to walk them.

Barefoot Gentile:

Thanks a lot for the info on ITBS.
Many of the causes seem very applicable;
- Bad at warm-up and cool-down
- Cross-leg sitting with left over right
- Weak hip abductor muscles
- Ran on horizontally banked surface the last two times before the pain started

I will start doing exercises for my hip abductors and start stretching exercises as well. Will try to improve these things over a few weeks and see how it goes. Again, thanks. It seems very plausible.

skedaddle:
Thanks for the input. It might actually be, I have been thinking and reading to much, so I actually get out of sync. I'll try to "not" think, and find a relaxed and intuitive way.

Just sympathies, no good advice.
Downhills kill my legs. I can never seem to find the right form.
Uphill all day, if only someone would carry me down.
Sorry this has become a lingering problem for you. Frustrating!

I would agree! Sounds exactly like symptoms I had many years ago. I got surgery to release it.
