The virus - human papillomavirus (HPV) - caused warts to form on the sole of her feet.
Doctors say one of the symptoms of HPV is the forming of a hard lump.
If the lumps form on the soles of the feet, the person may feel pain when pressure is exerted on them.
"Because this virus needs direct contact (for transmission), I would advise that you don't share shoes and socks (with people)infected with the virus," advised Dr Lynn Chiam, consultant dermatologist at Mount Elizabeth Novena Hospital.
"It can also be easily spread in communal areas and communal showers, and also in the office. I know a lot of people like to kick off their shoes and walk on the carpet. I wouldn't advise you to do that."
Thanks, as a.new member and discoverer of BF running and walking, I just trying to inform myself of.all the risks and benefits associated with it. not trying to scare anyone.
Warts are transmitted through surfaces that have been in contact with people who have warts. Since, I'm the only barefooter in my neighborhood, I'm good.
The news article is attention seeking garbage news with the sole purpose pf generating pageviews. It mixes information about plantar warts and cervical cancer. Although, caused by the same variety of virus, the different strains have different rates of transmission and epidemiological impact.
Are there really people scraping their fingers and/or genitals on the floor???
I'd be a lot more concerned about things people touch with their hands and/or genitals, such as a public toilet seat.
You can dodge a lot of colds and flus by not touching light switches or door knobs with your hands. Use your elbows, which can't touch your face afterward.
I think this is the much more likely explanation of how she actually got infected...
Excerpted from the CDC's website: http:
HPV is transmitted through intimate skin-to-skin contact....You can develop symptoms years after you have sex with someone who is infected, making it hard to know when you first became infected.
Gotta love it when Fact-Checking no longer becomes a requirement to maintain "Journalistsic Integrity" and becomes optional to help drive page views...
