Well, I've got a hunch that you are supposed to wear shoes during commute and then take them off before entering to keep the carpet and sofas clean, as she says:
"Well, it keeps the carpet clean," says Levete drily. "Also it's a great leveller, and it's relaxing: you can put your feet on the sofas."
Real barefooters would have more or less dirty feet upon arrival - not ideal for a nice carpet!

Or maybe they have a foot bath at the door?

Interesting thought though. What do habitual barefooters do when they visit friend's houses, and others are asked to remove their shoes as they enter?
.

I always think it weird when I wear shoes to go to the gym and swimming pool but leave in bare feet. I kinda figure that they won't appreciate dirty feet coming in but won't mind clean feet leaving :)

I will probably get flack for this, but here goes. My kids are always barefoot, except for school. We even shop barefoot quite a bit. They both take mixed martial arts, as you know. They are barefoot in the Dojang, which is required. But...in order to walk into the dojang, I require they wear their flip-flops, so they don't track dirt and black tar from the asphalt parking lot onto the mats. It's a matter of respect.

I have conditioned everyone at my gym to have me arrive barefoot, workout barefoot, and leave barefoot. When I do speed-drills, I have VFF or NB minimus to allow me to stop and go quickly without hurting myself. They still think I am odd. Though I do clean my soles after arriving at the gym even if my feet are then cleaner than the carpet at the gym!!

I hope you're kidding lol putting socks over dirty feet which will eventually sweat and reanimate previously dormant bacteria seems like a great way to get disease
Well, actually I was not kidding: If I visit a friend's house just to share coffee/cake and a talk, I won't stay long enough to get sweating feet. On leaving I'll take the socks off and once home I'll throw them in the washing machine (and wash my feet as well). No problem with disease: my immune system will do the rest! :)
