Study of barefoot running in slow motion. J Keller running on a treadmill

The film is a running study of runner J. Keller on a treadmill in slowmotion, captured from a 16mm film from the 1960´ies.

The film was found and retrieved from Conny Lenz's film store.
The footwear designer Conny Lenz was a barefoot runner and designed ergonomic footwear for example the Jacoform shoe.
Another shoe of Conny Lenz was a running shoe for track and field competitions.
With his shoe designed for running, a 400 m runner had a 3 cm longer stride!

I love the shot of him coming right at the camera. The human "paw" is so powerful and majestic in its raw form. So animalistic! Just so real and awesome!

The sideways camera angle at time = 0:33 appears to be a great example of the elastic energy that can be stored with a forefoot landing. His heel touches briefly, then the whole foot springs up. (It's something that I haven't seen in other videos.) Amazing!

Nice find, Sid!

Notice how the toes spread in the overhead shot when he's walking. Now imagine that in a tight shoe :/

Posted this video on my facepage along with "This is why I run barefoot, to utilize the elastic recoil, inherent to the lower extremities. After all, one does not wrap a basketball in foam to 'absorb the impact.'"

Well, I was referring to something a bit different. That energy could also go into the lower back or knees, which don't necessarily recoil elastically in the same way, especially in a heelstriker, right? ;)

Oops. That's what happens when a physicist reads your question.

The physics version of the question would be where the sharp "impulse" goes.
