Do I just post what's going on?

Yes, just post your question, and a doc will answer you soon.

Yes, but can you try to narrow it down a bit anyway?

Ok here goes... Thank you.

I started running in 2009/2010. a baaaaaaaad pregnancy (health and pelvic pain) which resulted in Bad hip/back pains. (SPD?) I took everything really steady. Managed 5k in 2012 for race for life. Sought professional opinion and did phsio with no success. One diagnosis of greater trochanteric bursitis, treatment of physio and cortisone injections. Pain centered around L4/L5/S1. Kept up with abit of running but really was in a lot of pain. Stopped running in 2012. Sought professional opinion again. Tall of surgery to remove the bursa. Passed through the system. More physio, more cortisone injections, more talk, still talk of this diagnosis. "youre over weight." "bt I can't exercise!" Was told my arches are too high and i needed orthotics. No help. No relief. Even walking painful. Back to gp, one last referral before surgery. I cried with this laat referral woman. She told me that an undiagnosed issue (elements of hypermobilityand. She used to joking yell at me for bending too far lol) and my two bad pregnancies have destroyed me. Told to stop yoga as its destroying my body with the new diagnosis. She said I could do pilates and weights as this would help with the hypermobility. All the physios and now the podiatrist have told me to stay away from barefoot, but it seem to make so much sense to me. (I am currently dealing with shin splints but think I'm over the worst)

Are there any thoughts from any of you about any of it? Anything I can do for the hypermobility? (Should I be getting diagnosis for which joints are hypermobile?) Are they right that I should be leaving barefootedness behind?

Sorry for wwaffling, just wanted to get it all out. Thank you for reading.

Hi Hula,

Can I get clarification on a couple things before I give some thoughts?

1. Have you been running barefoot this whole time?
2. Where is your shin pain?
3. Is your current pain right on the spine, or along the sides?
4. When you say hypermobility, do you mean instability as measured by xray? Or is the physio's opinion that you are too flexible (which is nonsense as far as I'm concerned.
5. Have you sought out some help from a seasoned barefooter to look at how you are running?

Thanks for replying. Happy to answer questions.

1. Been working up to barefoot for over a year. (But have spent most of my life barefoot) switched to barefoot running when shins started hurting and hadn't healed after 3 months of resting. Had no pain in shin after barefoot running.

2. The shin pain, when it comes, as I look down at my leg, runs down the right hand inner side of the shin. If that makes sense. So just to the side of the actual bone.

3. The back pain is always to the right of the base of my spine as you would look at me from behind. S1?

4, had no xrays. Feel like the system has just ignored me as they don't know (and appear to not want to know) what's going on with me) the CAT woman who said it have elements of hypermobility was convinced I am. (Other aspects of hypermobility, the issues outside of flexibility do fit with me too)

5, I haven't yet. Although I am running with a seasoned barefooter at parkrun this morn.

I feel like I've been fobbed off and left to just deal with this. I'm sorry to ask. But I really do appreciate your advice.

I'm dubious on the issue of "hypermobility". That's not a diagnosis and doesn't help you. Actual instability is something else entirely, but requires x-ray to really see and you would likely have neurological symptoms.

As usual, internet doctoring is difficult because we only get a piece of the picture but it sounds to be a facet or disc generated pain in your lower back. I don't have any specific advice on that issue because I haven't examined you, but I doubt that the yoga is necessarily bad for you. If it causes pain it should be avoided for the time being, to be re-visited later on when you are feeling better. My best advice is to leave the system and seek out a chiropractor and and acupuncturist to help with your lower back issues if you are not getting the help you need.

For the shin issues, be diligent about working out the sore muscles daily. Start at the upper part of just inside your shin and press. If there is pain, hold it with moderate pressure until the pain subsides, then move down a thumb width and repeat. Use a rolling pin on your calves both sides and the bottom of your feet, again both sides. I usually suggest three minutes, twice a day for the calves and feet. Do the shin treatment twice a day too.

To answer your question on BF running. You don't need to stop just because. Listen to your body. If you hurt, slow down. Go for a walk if running hurts. If I go out for a run and it doesn't feel right, I slow down. If it still doesn't feel right, I go home and try again tomorrow. Remember Caballo's mantra: easy, light, smooth, then fast. Read a lot on this forum, and there are plenty of books out there that will help. Arches too high? Nonsense. They are arches.

I think the best thing you can do is find someone who will work with you, instead of pass you off.

Thank you for your helpful advice.

Once we can afford it, I will look into private care who can assess the back.

The yoga doesn't hurt, she told me to stop as It won't help with the hypermobility.

Once again, thank you for taking the time to reply. It means a lot.
