Mileage Reporting 39th week of 2014

Cool 5 mile run at 5:30 am.
no wildlife to speak of today.
clear skies and lots of stars.

I took it easy on Sunday and spent about 6 hours walking about 1.75 miles, AHR about 45 bpm.
Monday I tried to get on the new extension of the Highline in NYC but arrived well before they opened the gates for the day :(
Tried again this morning and found that the new half mile is covered in chip-seal - quite challenging but it did make the 300 yards of serrated steel bar walkway shortly later almost enjoyable :)

After taking a week off of running to rest some very sore calves and to get some work done it is time to get back at it.

Sunday - 20 miles shod. Worked on a run/walk Ultra slow pace. Run was in the afternoon (my worst running time) and in high humidity. Averaged 11mm.

Monday - 3 mile barefoot walk on a bike path in town with my wife and daughter. Daughter was also barefoot.

Tuesday - 8 miles shod on pavement. Tempo run turned into race pace. Wanted to get done in under an hour. Got it. Last miles were 7:19, 6:59, and 6:39. Nearly a 5k pr. I need to be careful about getting bit by the speed bug, but I am enjoying some faster miles.

Wednesday - 5 miles barefoot. No gadget, just enjoying the morning.

Monday - 6 miles barefoot in the early AM was okay, but legs felt tight and iffy, but still better overall. Lots of rolling and massaging that day and the spot that had been tender was not anymore, so that had to be better.

Tuesday - 105 minutes (1 hour 45 minutes, but 105 sounds so much better ;)) on the spin bike, with some standing intervals out of necessity for my bum. Seemed to help loosen leg still more, still no tenderness when massaging, but a bit tight on stairs, so I was cautious. Then, in the late evening, coordinated with late night pickle making, I swam 22 minutes straight, then aqua jogged while singing for 40 minutes. More rolling and massage.

Wednesday - Slept a bit too late and only had time for barefoot 10K before getting to my mom and dad's house for care, but the run felt pretty loose, so I am starting to feel hopeful again, both about running and the marathon. Might try to run again this evening to put on more miles, but I definitely have to do some chores first!

Ended up aqua jogging for almost an hour yesterday afternoon while chatting with a friend in my pool. Then, today, I ran a pleasant 8.25 barefoot miles in the morning, then rode the spin bike for 2 hours early evening alongside hubby while watching some new computer animated space pirate movie - not something I would have picked, but it was reasonably diverting.

10.1 barefoot miles in the cool noon air with my 2 youngest daughters for 8 miles of lovely chatting and discussing college classes, how to deal with people, and a new running book I'm reading. Very pleased to report that I actually comfortably, and without trying to, sped up the last 2 miles and ran mile 10 at a 10:20 mm pace. Just over 2 weeks until the marathon, so will try a short run tomorrow, a rest day Sunday, then a long run (maybe 22 miles?) on Monday. That will tell me if I can run the marathon.

It all sounds great happy!
Are you sharing the name of the new running book?
I am rooting for you!!

Thanks, Ru

Thanks, Runlite! The book is What Makes Olga Run? and is about aging, rather than strictly running, although running is a big part of the discussion. I hope to write a review of it on my blog when I am done. :)

Woohoo! Another 8 miles barefoot. Coach said "that was short enough." At least he ran the first 4 miles with me. Which was on very rough asphalt and my legs were kind of stiff, so was slow, but then I loosened up (and got to smoother asphalt) and by the time I got to mile 8, I ran it in a 9:47 mm pace and felt like I was gliding. AND everything feels great!

Friday morning - 8km run on the beach. I had very little sleep the night before, and I always run 'rough' when I do that. I must have been really bad, because by lunch time on Friday I was hobbling with a pain I sometimes get at the back of the heel, right at the bottom below the achilles. I'm assuming either insertional tendinitis or bursitis, hopefully the latter. Fast forward to Sunday afternoon, and it is still too sore to run on, but it is easing. I'm rolling my calves occasionally in the hope that this will help, but it's now a race against time for the half marathon I planned on doing next Sunday. I guess this sorts out my plans for the taper week - I'll play basketball on Wednesday night if I can run by then, and I'll hope for the best.

Most excellent 10 mile run at 5:00 am
I went on an old course that I made a while back which takes me on a soft asphalt track that loops the junior collage for 2 miles.
heard 3 owls.
I saw lots and lots of rabbits (most on the soft track) it was really dark and they would shoot across the track.
I saw a skunk in a ball field just kinda rooting around.
Just a really fun outing!:D
Last run of the week for me. Total miles 28.

Biking and aqua jogging and rest from running for about one and a half weeks is what worked for me for what sounds very similar.
