Mileage Reporting 38th week of 2014

The trails started calling to me this week so back to the trails...Monday 5.5 miles of fast trail hiking....Tuesday 3 miles trail running. Today checked out the local woods and hiked 2 miles...woods are a bit over grown probably wait another week or so to start running there.... I'll go to the local park trails for now.

6.5km around the streets this morning. Cold and wet - only 6 degrees C with early spring having a winter re-lapse. I'm starting to realise that there is a temperature below which my feet really don't like running on wet concrete and rough roads, so if I'm facing conditions like this I'm going to try to keep things short and slow and try to avoid ripping my feet to shreds. I have no idea how the winter challenge folks do it.

I looked at my calendar last night and realised that I am supposed to be running a half marathon in two and a half weeks. My preparation hasn't been ideal lately with a few niggles, so I guess I need to find a balance between doing a couple of long runs in the next week and a half and not pushing things too far. I haven't done the distance before, but I'm pretty confident that I can make it without too much fuss if I keep the pace slow early. I think I'll be doing it in minimal shoes though, which is a bummer, but I suspect the majority of the course will be on stony gravel bush roads and I couldn't handle that on a long run. I'll send an email to the organiser to ask, just in case.

Tuesday - 75 minutes on spin bike also did not irritate tight leg
Wednesday - 50 (lunch time)+ 60 (after dinner and into the black of night) minutes of aqua jogging. The evening stint was done while singing with gusto for a full 40 minutes, then off and on after that. Quite the breath control and vocal cord tuning exercise.:singing: Leg still seems to be healing, but my mom is requiring much more supervision/help so that is making me really problem solve to fit in exercise. Others in the family are helping, but I am the main person. Not that I mind at all. She has been a dear and wonderful mother. Exercise has taken priority over some household chores, but it's not a health hazard yet...:nurse:

Comments from others at the race
(As always) "How long have you been running barefoot?"
"look no shoelaces"
"how do you train to run like that" reply: don't put on shoes and go out and run.
"you forgot you shoes" twice same guy, reply 2nd time he said it: No I wore them off!

Saturday - 7.5km in shoes with the local running club. Spent the last half being dragged along by a mate who is much quicker than me, so that was fun.

Sunday - 16.3km around the streets. My long run for the week, trying to build for a half marathon in two weeks. The tide was high, so it was off to the roads. I usually run over to Barwon Heads, so today I ran on the side of the road for a change, running on the side where I could see the cars coming at me. All was well except for the time a big peleton of bike riders came up the bike lane with a couple of cars behind them. I had the choice between jumping into a ditch or crossing the road, so I darted across the road and listened to a cacophony of yells from the lycra warriors. I didn't get too many comments, but one of my mates from the running club cruised past on bike and called out "Put some shoes on, you hippie!".

3 very relaxed miles around my pond loop. Legs felt a bit tight everywhere for the first mile, but I tried not to panic. But I finished without problem. Wedding reception in the evening and I was going to avoid dancing, but the music came on and we did a little "Beat it" and "Twist and Shout," plus 2 more, but then I drug myself home to be on the safe side. Legs feel good this morning, so I have permission from The Coach to try a 6 mile run on Monday.

Nice 6.51km run after work before dinner to take me over 50K for Toes on Roads. Timed mile in the middle at 10:20 minutes. Not feeling it today. Interesting though that I had a similar split time mile on the run back when I wasn't pushing. Was downhill though :) First long (for me) run for a while. Felt great after
.
