X-Dog Ole's Assault

X-Dog Ole's Assault
By Paraganek

Ran X-Dog Ole's Assault trail race.

The whole experience was exactly as X-Dog describes it:

"Long before there were all those foo foo "adventure" runs, with their foam and man-made mud pits, and their one beer per ticket post event "parties" there was the OLE'S ASSAULT. Ole's still sets the ADVENTURE STANDARD. And none of that one beer per ticket crap.

We will not give away too much information about the course. Surprise is a part of the event. The adventure will take place primarily on private property in the Oregon coastal "hills" near Astoria. Aside from the terrain and natural obstacles, there will be no less than 10 challenges created specifically for the event. Most of the course will be extremely well marked and navigation will be simple. You will be on foot, or on some other portion of your body for the entire event -- you will not be able to just run the course. You will be a filthy mess at the finish."

My son Lukas (9) really wanted to join me so we ran together.

It was his very first trail race and he loved it. The obstacles were fun (mud pit was #1 of course ;))

I did it barefoot, Lukas in his VFFs.

There was a mile and half long section on a nasty gravel forest road which was a tough challenge for my feet. The rest was a piece of cake

We really had a great time together

The whole course was about 8 miles, we finished in 2 hours, Lukas placed first in his AG.

Wow. If you had a tough time on that gravel i'm glad i didn't go. I would've flailed and cried right there.

It was the worst gravel road I have run barefoot on so far. Worse than Leif-Erikson road (bigger and sharper gravel). Good it was not such a long stretch. I could not have lasted much longer on the way back doing it downhill. :inpain:

Thanks for the warning. No ole's assault. I barely make it through havoc at the hideout.

I miss being able to run with my son. He's 12 today! He would run barefoot or in VFFs too. We had the best time out there. It brought us closer together each time we ran. It helped to clear the air and clear our heads. When we were out there, I gained respect for him, and he gained respect for me. He loved to run through the rain, barefoot of course, and whenever it would rain, he would ask if we could go running. We would splash and splash around while the shoddies ran for cover. People surely thought we were nuts...or I was a bad momma! Ha! One time, it got so late while we were out there, and it was really dark before we realized it, yet we still had another 3 miles or so to go! We were laughing and carrying on dancing the whole way back to the car and no one could see how much crazy fun we were having being silly.

Anyway, thanks for sharing those pictures of you and your son. It brought a smile to my face to see your joy. Keep that.

Okay, now I feel better. A lot of the gravel roads I have faced have been like that and I have usually opted for sandals. :)

Lukas looks like he is about to heel strike in those VFF's in the first Finishing picture there.

Good job on the gravel, it's been getting colder up here, and I haven't been strictly barefoot as much outside lately, so my soles have regressed a little and are quietly cringing at some of those pictures ;).
