The first attempt at growing the BRS membership through a Meetup.com group has been launched. It is a division of the Michigan Chapter (Lower Peninsula).
Tomorrow Meetup.com sends out the invitations to it's own existing community, and the more members listed in the group the more likely new members will be to join, which will introduce them to the BRS and membership here.
Indeed just now I received an email from Meetup encouraging me to invite everyone I know to help make the group look bigger!
Please take a minute to join so that the group will look more appealing and therefore attract more barefooters to the BRS.
Thanks!

Thank you, LB, for posting this.

Meetup has been great for me, here in Pittsburgh; great new friends sharing energy and vibes <3 for a myriad of interests. Sante! d

Question? In the title of this thread, you said it's free, but is it? I thought you were paying a yearly fee for creating a Meetup group.

Monthly, but I meant it is FREE to any BRS member that wants to help promote it by joining and making the membership look larger.
Currently I'm paying monthly, but it will be much cheaper if I switch to annually. I want to see how it goes first, so far of the 14 members three are local Meetup people that joined after getting the invitation from Meetup. None of them have RSVPed for Saturday as of yet, but Diane and I will be there for sure. (lousy weather forecast as of now)
The running clubs I've been going to that are part of meetup get 50-60 people per run, but typically only a dozen RSVP.
I finally made the front row and the TOP of the sloping sidewalk three days ago! First time out of three attempts.

Nice picture. I bet they think you are a nut job. My old running club used to think I was.

Well, they probably still do.

Most of them are not only so much younger but they tend to be transplants and single, looking through Meetup to find friends and sometimes more. When over a few brews following the run they realize I'm not just a 61 year resident of the area but also a married dentist they are even more shocked. Btw, the place they meet every Monday is Buzzie's brew pub! Remember her? I ran into here there a few years ago when she was actively posting. I sent her an invite to the new barefoot meetup but she hasn't responded. One young girl asked me if I ever ran with the barefoot meetup BRS group! Word's getting out!

Diane's been joining me for the Tuesday evening club runs , that club has been running for 31 years now, without any help from Meetup. This was two days ago.image.jpg

Try contacting her through PM on this site.

I had emailed her the invite. I have her cell, I'll try texting her the Meetup invitation in addition to a BRS PM.

The first Meetup was a success! You can read about it in the comments section here:

http://www.meetup.com/BRS-Barefoot-...t-Michigan/events/205214682/?a=ce1_grp&rv=ce1

Please note the next one is scheduled for Saturday September 20th plenty of RSVPs and new members would really help the cause.
Oh, and for the record, over 50% of attendees voted for the Paint Creek Tavern, but half of them decided to stop at the knit store before lunch and re-hydration.

I'm going to give the Meetup BRS group a mercy killing. Other than those that joined to help it out without really being able to ever attend, only two true locals signed up. Neither made it to a meetup, nor answered any qustions regarding best times/days etc.
I asked for a "hibernation" type thing (my own terminology) in order to save the stuff without paying the monthly dues all winter, but they declined. Sounds to me that once I kill it with out naming a successor you guys that joined might be getting notices that you can take it over. Oh well, Meetup's loss, I would have started paying again in the spring for at least 8 months but they want no part of a seasonal group.

Sorry to hear it didn't work out with Meetup Board. Nice try. Thanks for trying it out. Don't let it get you down. We have to keep trying to get people out there
.

Bummer, Board. Thanks for your willingness to try though. Every little bit helps.
