Mileage reporting 37th week of 2014

3.5km barefoot run on warm, smooth Tarmac tonight, avoiding a few conkers and beech nuts. The sun had been shining all day. Thinking about the other runners I met not being able to feel the warm ground made me smile. I think this might have been the first time I've done a full run in my home town in bare feet. It felt like it had all come together today and I was actually proper running :)
.

Was doing very well on my long run, until into mile 16 my right calf started to cramp. I can usually deal with this ocassioanl problem by relaxing and letting my foot hang more between steps, but not this time. About a mile later I was limping pretty bad, so was a good girl and called for a ride home. Made it 17.7 total in my Lunas. The leg has loosened up some, but is still tight in the lower regions, so I don't know yet what I'm dealing with. I do know I was cruising along at a comfortable 10 mm pace most of the way, and then had backed off to 10:30ish around mile 15. For the record, no swimming or dancing Saturday evening, so that wasn't it....

I slept in a bit this morning after my little one decided to have one of her 'nocturnal' nights, but I decided to go for a morning run anyway. Great decision. 8.5km on the beach, with a bit of wind to deal with. I usually collect any interesting shells that I see so that I can give them to my little girl, and for some reason today there were quite a few really good ones including one that I haven't seen on my beach before. There was also a really big perfect conch shell that was longer than my hand, but it had a creature in it and I always leave them be if there is something living in them. I might go back tomorrow to see if the albatrosses have had their way with it though - it was a spectacular shell - at least twice as big as the next biggest one I've seen.

After the run, I decided to jump in the ocean for a quick bit of bodysurfing - the waves were small and friendly but the water was bloody cold! Very refreshing.

Another 8km run on the beach this morning. I went out at a slow and lazy pace, and I was in danger of dozing off for a bit.

That was, until a lady flashed me. I was running along near my turning point and there were a few regular "iceberger" swimmer types who are often in the water in the morning. Two got out about half a km ahead. As I got a little closer I noticed they were drying off and getting changed. One was topless, and I thought it was a man until I got closer - she started drying her back and I suddenly realised that it was quite obvious that she wasn't actually a man. Eyes front, Larry! :D

5 mile run at 5:00 am
Heard 1 owl.
Still 81 deg. f. here with 70% rh .
Big bright moon (clear skies) not much breeze.

I was out on a walk/run in the woods and decided to go off trail and just run up some hills between the trees. I must have done a little twist on my bad knee so now it hurts (it's just a bit and nothing serious) on the left side too. It's that knee that also hurt on the right side when I stress it too much, my runners knee..

The joys of pushing the limits..

Btw it's progressing well. My knee. I'm very careful (except for that little dumb thing there) and rest a lot.

Well? Don't leave us hanging, how were the Sockwas X8's?

I can't make much out of one run except the size 12 is the right size for me and the X8 is slightly cooler on the feet and breathes a bit better than the G4 version. I don't run the same with shoes right now and find my footstrike is harder than barefoot...I think it will take several runs close together to get a better idea on these but they seem like a good neutral shoe so far worth testing further when the cold weather comes back.

Sunday: loaded carries to picnic table, about a mile altogether.

Monday pm.: deadlifts, rows, and overhead presss.

Tuesday: zilch

Wed am: 2/3 mile of my one-mile run-commute, 1/3 walked. Almost Winter Challenge windchill and wet surfaces--refreshing! Harvest moon obscured by clouds, hopefully tomorrow morning I'll be able to run under it. It was beautiful Tuesday morning.

After last Tuesday afternoon's run, my left knee's MCL(?) felt sore the next morning, so much so that I had to walk last Wednesday morning's 5k, and even then, it got progressively sorer as I walked. Then Abide suggested massaging, and this seems to be helping. I had thought that tight lower leg muscles would only affect the tendons in the feet, but apparently they can tug on the knee as well. We'll see, but I'm hopeful continued massaging with 'the stick' will get me back in the game. Most of July and August while I was trying to regain some semblance of running fitness I hadn't been very good about massaging the lower leg, so perhaps some knots developed, even though the muscles didn't feel particularly tight. I'd like to take another stab at a daily 5k routine this fall before winter hits, eventually working some tempo, interval/hills, and long runs back in.

Funny thing, the knee soreness doesn't seem to interfere with my back squats, so it's definitely running-related. The ST in general is going really well these days. It's become very minimalistic, just alternating a workout of deadlifts, rows, and overhead presses with a workout of squats, bench presses, and pulldowns, with a few assistance exercises thrown in when I have time. Keeping things basic and heavy is producing good results.

Tuesday - Lots of time on my feet doing chores, occasionally massaging and stretching tight lower leg; in evening, swimming 30 minutes in 3 x 10 minute intervals. By the end of the day, the leg felt pretty good, so I was guardedly hopeful about things.

Wednesday - woke up early for a very easy 6 mile run to test the leg. It all went really well until the 5.5 mile mark, when it tightened up again for no apparent reason. Still, it is better than it was after the long run on Monday. I will just take it easy again tomorrow, maybe try to run easy again on Friday.

Sunday - 4 miles barefoot
Monday - 6 miles on rain soaked ground. Barefoot unless the occasional mud shoes count as min shod.:)
Tuesday - 10 miles sandals, rough trail, nice and easy.

Sandals work my calves a little more than barefoot or in shoes. Don't know why, I just have to be careful not to push the pace. Hope you can figure out that issue. Smart call ending the run soon. 2 years ago I was feeling some calf cramps but pushed on through the pain. Even showing off some through a college campus and it put me out of commission for over a week.

I am having a lazy week as far as running goes.
13 miles this week so far.

Sorry about this Laura I hope you can sorted out quickly.

Yesterday and today were high tempo runs of about 1.2-2.0 miles. Had to run at high tempo just to stay warm. Sunday it was still summer, about 25C then Monday and today we are struggling to reach 10C. Where the heck is fall? Does that not come before winter?
Move to Iowa I say:)
