Mileage reporting 36th week of 2014

Wednesday evening - fit in a 20 minute swim

Thursday - 6 miles, still in my Lunas, later in day 45 minutes on spin bike alongside hubby

Friday- 8 miles barefoot, but the tootsies had trouble with being quite sensitive the last couple of miles. Since I had recently run 22 miles barefoot on the same course, I am surprised the 26.2 seems to have been too much. Also swam straight 20 minutes in the evening.

Saturday - 5 miles in Lunas. Did speedier intervals for miles 2 and 4. Mile 2 was only 9:26 mm pace, but mile 4 was a nice 8:37. Then I complicated my life by taking pity on 2 loose dogs, pne of which was a 4-6 month old pup. I had benn seeibg them off and on for the last 2 miles, and when I was done they were dangerously close to a busy road. Collars, but no tags, so I brought them home. No luck finding the owners, so I will have to resort to the pound. Hubby consoles me that they are cute and adoptable... oh, probably another short swim this afternoon, then some dancing tonight.

This is very interesting. The exact opposite happens to me. It's very unusual. Other people start turning into nincompoops.
(Or perhaps, my tolerance of tomfoolery diminishes?) ;)

Really? I mean, if you knew me, it would be clear from half a mile away if I haven't gotten a workout for more than 24 hrs, at which point you would want to move way more than half a mile away. I have some issues with mood regulation, and exercise of about an hour per day seems to deal with it. Nothing else does. I start to feel effects starting to wear off after about 12 hrs.
So you are the opposite? How do you keep it up then? Because for me, the main reason to stay fit is to stay sane. Other health benefits can drift.

Thursday evening - 7 miles (conservative guess, my gadget was out of battery), unshoes sandals. About half of the run was pavement where my sandals were a little "slappy", need to work on that.

Saturday - 23 miles shod. I'm going to call this one a hike. Tried to run, but the trail was one of the most rugged I have been on. This was the Pine Valley Wilderness area in Southern Utah. I had planned on another Ultra distance day, but I ran out of water, energy, and time. You don't go to this area for mileage, you go for an ego check. Beautiful views after topping out on multiple ridges.

Weekly total of 85 miles with over 3 miles of elevation gain.

Nice! but shouldn't you be harvesting by now?:)

Ha, you caught me neglecting work. Yes we will start as soon as we see what this hurricane down south does. The mileage will drop off and my clutch knee will return.

Very nice photo!
I'm not doing so well in gravel, myself. How much does it affect your pace, and did you get any bruises?

I struggle in gravel, especially gravel on a hard surface. Pace can be 2-4mm slower with some of the worse patches walking. I don't bruise, but I get really sensitive behind the second toe on the pads. I tend to run on the outside edges of my feet and even heelstrike at a slow pace, so I know I need to work on technique. One trick I tried before getting lazy and just throwing on foot wear (from Barefoot Gentile I believe) is to run gravel at night where you can't see the big pieces. Picture your feet molding to the rocks and accepting them. Watch some of Dan's videos, his feet just seem to mold around the gravel.

Last night late run of 3.5 miles barefoot in our neighborhood. The rough asphalt had my feet slightly sore at the finish as I have been running on the local bike trails.

This morning left home at 5:30 for more of a distance run on the trails but decided to mix the course up slightly and ran only about 1 mile on the trail before taking to the city streets. I picked a few rough surfaced asphalt streets in the beginning ending with the smoother concrete streets once my soles began to feel a bit sore.

Had a great 6 mile run and it was nice to run a different route. My legs were feeling it in the end but not too bad my feet are tingling some from the asphalt streets.

So, when I say "exact opposite", I might mean "not unlike you and many other people", particularly with use of the winky emoticon. When I don't exercise I might be a bit more grumpy, as my ability to tolerate tomfoolery and nincompoopery diminishes. :D

This general article seems to do a fairly good job of summarizing some of the benefits of exercise. http://napervillesun.suntimes.com/2014/08/27/brain-exercise/

In retrospect, one thing that I wish that my parents did, was exercise with me as a kid. It probably would have helped engrain some healthy habits that I didn't learn until adulthood.

One of the reasons why I get up early to exercise, is that it's one of the most important things that I do each day. If I exercise, everything else seems to fall into place. I sometimes think to myself, "I'm a better person when I exercise", and I probably am! :D

Most excellent 11 mile run at 5:30 am., 73 deg. f. 78% rh.
I heard a couple of owls.
Last run of the week for me. Total miles 29.5.
I love to run barefoot!

btw had a GLORIOUS run today. Will post about it later.....

Ok, it was maybe 8 miles total? Hard to tell. Ran along while my kids biked, all along the city, here and there. We stopped every mile or two to do something like see my daughter's junior high, go to my university, eat a late breakfast, go to a pretty park where I did barefoot loops around a squarish brick walkway around a small lake, then ran back home. It was beautiful, 70s and sunny. Got to run through a big splash pad at the park to cool off.

Got it. I'm dense. that way.
OTOH, I can put up with the goofiness of my kids much much better after a workout rather than before.

My parents didn't "believe" in exercise (grew up poor, working class in Chicago. Exercise was something you tried to get out of). My mom always says I learned by rebelling and doing the opposite. :D
