Mileage reporting 31st week of 2014

Tuesday afternoon, 3.5 miles.

The run down by the river felt pretty good. Running is starting to get easier again. Endurance fitness and Strength fitness really are two different things. I'm stronger now than I was last year, but my running fitness is still a long ways behind where it was at the end of last fall. Still, having a stronger posterior chain is really helping my running form and posture. I'm also getting a little better at recognizing just the right amount to push the pace. Too much, and it becomes a tempo run, I get tired, and want to stop. Not enough, and I find myself back in the aerobic rut.

One thing, I've pretty much given up on trying to program strength training with respect to running. On Monday I shredded my posterior chain with lots of heavy singles on the deadlift. The run next day felt a little stiff to begin with, but by the end it had helped loosen things up. Aerobic runs are mostly slow-twitch and ST is mostly fast-twitch so I guess that's way there isn't much interference. Soreness in the same areas from both can be deceiving I guess. Might've been different if I had been doing intervals.

Collar bone out of alignment. I hadn't even thought to check that, maybe that's the source of all my problems! :p

Seriously though, I didn't even know ones collar bone could go out of alignment, and how do you tell? You been drinking again before running? :wacky:
With Jen anything is possible!
Don't want to stir up a big MAF debate again... I did sort of try it. And almost all my running this has been around my maf. I hope its just overuse, and maybe I'm just not letting it fully heal. Because I've really taken the pace easy this year and given up racing and very careful about ramping up my mileage slowly, yet my calf is bothering me much worse.
I find sometimes running slowly winds up and tightens my muscles or tendons more than running quicker. Running quicker seems to produce more soreness but less tightness.

Have you explored hydration and/or dietary possibilities? Drinking alcohol past 1-3 drinks can also interfere with recovery. Are you still working odd shifts? Anyway, hope you figure it out.

Sorry to hear about this. Hope you figure it out. Are you still able to hike?
Yeah I probably could hike alright, its not like debilitating or anything, doesnt bother me biking or doing stairs at work. But I havent hiked since I took that pic in my avatar last year, unless you count the couple local park trails which are like 1 mile. Just too much going on. I did have a two week vaca end of september-october I planed to do my first >week long hike, but I think I'm cancelling that too. Maybe next year I'll go on some hikes.

Huh. I didn't think I was stirring up debate. I guess I think of it more as running with more moderation and gradual building up than a strict programmed approach. Anyway, we all have our weak links in our running that we have to problem solve. I hope you can figure out yours. :)

Sorry I meant to say I didn't want to stir up the debate. I actually had 2 or 3 more paragraphs in my response I deleted lol. Certainly running at around ones MAF should at least be a little easier on the legs but hasnt been helping me much lately.

Odd shifts, yeah, thats about the biggest change from last year where I was actually on a normal work week. 12hr shifts, flipping back and forth between days and night constantly. Other stress too, going through divorce which really got me stressed out early in the year. There were a couple weeks in there my bp was in the stage 2 hypertensive range for a while. Settled back down to norm for me (its always been a bit high). Diet - about the same as its been. I have good meals and plenty of bad ones mixed in too. Drinking, yeah moderately, about the same. I dont have a beer or glass of wine every night, but the 2 or 3 I have on my days off brings my average to probably 1 per day. I am cutting that back a little starting a week ago too. I know I need to drink more water, thats always been the case.

Anyhow, thanks for the advice fellas, don't mean to derail the thread. On the mileage front I've done a couple easy miles on the bike with my son (he's only 8 riding a kid bike so we're only talking like 5-10mph), 2 days of ST, and doing a modest 8 floors (only 4 at a time) up and down every 2 hrs at work this week. Hopefully I'll get out for an easy run or bike ride over the weekend if the calf is feeling better (and it is feeling better today).

Tristan - you can now join the "Thread Hijacking Club"! Congratulations! :)

1.25 miles Moc3s, pavement - and with a "cat petting" -even better! I was admiring my new bra and underwear tonight when I noticed "them". Though I have only been running a total of about 10 miles over the last 3 weeks, I can see the "runners' abdominal muscles" returning! Whoo-hoo!!!

So.. I've not been writing here for a long time. I've been doing walks and runs but not that much. I've been mostly resting.
I've worked a lot.
This Saturday will be the day I'll run that mountain marathon I've been writing so much about.
I'm so excited! Can't wait.
Of course you'll get a race report afterwards, I just needed to share the excitement now.. :D

6.32 miles this morning, on the easy side. Took a rest day yesterday.

So it's just about a year now that I began running again and doing so either barefoot or in a pair of Xeros. About 400 of those miles have been barefoot. It's the first time ever that I've really run consistently, week in and week out, over a full year period of time. Mostly that's because I find running to be a much more pleasurable experience than when I ran in shoes, and was most poignantly reminded of that by the 3 times I used a pair of running shoes due to wintry conditions and when doing so, was just astounded at how awfully disconnected I felt from what I should be feeling.

Most excellent 8 mile run at 5:00 am 75 deg. f., 89% rh.
Heard 2 roosters crow and 2 owls crying out saw some rabbits.

I have not been reporting a lot last few weeks, but still, last week, I did run about 45km/28mi. This week so far:

It is August and temperature were almost those of Spring for the last few days.

Monday: 11.2km/7mi
Wednesday: 11km/6.8mi
Thursday:11.6km/7.2mi

I am trying to increase my weekly runs from 3 to 5, so I reduced the mileage / run. Goal is to keep a steady 45km / week till the end of the year

About one week to go before the City2Surf race (14km/8.7mi).

15 minutes run in my new Xero Connect sandals.

Tried walking in them first to see how they felt, and was surprised how hard my heal strikes when walking.

During the running though that wasn't an issue as I'd already started my transition to barefoot running and knew I didn't heal strike while running.

Surprised how much protection 4mm gives while still feeling almost barefoot, and didn't hear as much slapping as I expected.

So far pretty happy with them and look forward to running more with them. Hopefully my partner won't mind running with me in these as she's made it very clear she hates running with me when I'm barefoot :D

Thursday afternoon
6 miles down by the river, between Marshall and Ford Parkway Bridges. Feets got a little fried on the second half of the run, on the asphalt on the west side of the river, but today they feel fine.

I took a little too long getting there, so I was pressed to make sure I finished in time to pick up the kids. Taking back what I said two days ago, the ass-to-grass squats I did on Wednesday afternoon seemed to interfere with my ability to run yesterday. My legs felt stiff and I wanted to stop to walk several times, so I slowed to a pure aerobic pace. I'm glad I had a deadline, otherwise I would've walked a good chunk of it. Very sore today, but I'm satisfied because I think it's the longest continuous running I've done since March, maybe even last November. How did I allow myself to get like this?

Anyway, feels like I'm turning a corner, will try to keep running continuously for at least an hour from now on . . . maybe.

Minimal tightness in my shin muscles, I wonder if the deadlifts and squats have helped. In any case, I'm already looking forward to more ass-to-grass squats later this aft.

Those are Winter Challenge temps! :D It seems that the Winter Challenge excludes the southern hemisphere?

We're just a bit late (or early, depends which year's challenge you look at), and the season is also too short to get some competitive numbers !

Conservative estimate, 2.75 miles, Lunas on pavement. I have discovered that I can do one longer-ish run once a week if it is within an hour after the following criteria have been met: 1.) Kissing 2.) Deep conversation 2.) Kissing 3.) Alcohol 3.) Kissing 3.) Karoake 4.) Kissing :D I spent a lot of time actually smelling the roses throughout my run tonight. I kept waiting to snort a spider into my nose when someone was watching and then have to blast it out of my nose like a wad of cocaine - but, luckily and/or unluckily that didn't happen! I really HAVE almost snorted a spider up my nose, before.

Monday - 4 miles local roads at first light

Thursday - 4 miles local roads at first light

Friday - upper/lower body ST

Today - Nice morning long run at Rabbit Hill park 65-70F cloudy with a little breeze...1 mile warmup, 5 miles Maf test, 1 mile tempo then easy pace by feel....14.2 miles average heart rate was 138...stopped right at 2 hours due to feeling abrasion on some toes and my waffle weave tech shirt was bothering my nipples...I had forgot about these types of shirts doing that.

Another runner ran up next to me for about a mile asking about barefooting...he was wearing Altra road shoes...I told him about transitioning and about BRS...he said he would check out the BRS website...maybe he will show up here.

About 6 miles yesterday.

And then BOOM, just finished this run:

image.jpg

Did that today....was on pavement, about half of it STG and the other half with my Vibram KSO Evo's, which performed remarkably well.

That was my longest run ever, even back when I was competing at middle distance races when I was runner, my 'long runs' were about 12 miles, with my main race distance being only 800m back then.

Was a fairly rough run, but I needed it...

The weight is an issue on these long runs for sure, still weigh 240 pounds.

If you asked me how I feel right now, haha, I might say I feel like I been in a car wreck, but....I also feel like I'm 10 feet tall and made of molten steel lol
