Running when it's hot ... how're doing?

As temperatures reach 30°C with a humidex of near 40°C, I was wondering how you were handling running in the summer heat? In the heat, I typically run trails or avoid afternoon runs. I have a road event (42k) coming up and am concerned about how my feet will hold up to the hot asphalt. Does anyone have suggestions?

Good advice Ken Bob -- Makes sense about seeking out the rougher surface (less surface area for the hot asphalt to be in contact with the skin). I current look for the painted line. White or yellow it definitely is cooler.

My marathon is in Vermont with a 7am start. I'll remember to increase the cadence (which is pretty good advice for any time)

I did a run of about 5km yesterday afternoon when it was sunny and 32°C here in New Jersey. Under those conditions, the roads that get full sun get pretty hot. My limit is right around 55°C surface temperature and some sections of my run definitely felt like they were hotter than that. I found myself resorting the running on the sidewalk (white concrete), on the painted yellow lines, or even on the powerline shadows (only slightly cooler than the surrounding asphalt, but sometimes that's all I need to avoid burning) when nothing else was available. Feet came out warm but undamaged.

Thank you for this thread YOW.
