Mileage reporting 26th week of 2014

Nice 5 mile run at 5:00 am 73 deg. f., 83 % Rh.. heard some very vocal frogs on the creek crossings sounded cool!

I won't argue that we humans aren't accomplished sweaters, but man I hate pulling off a sweat-soaked tee shirt. Just something about how it feels against the back. Ugh.

12.6 mile long run today, 9.6 miles were barefoot. Went really well, was helped some by it being it cooler and slightly less humid. Still was a sweaty mess by the time I finished.

The funny thing about today's run was when I went out I was hardly feeling a want to run. I kind of thought I might only do 5 to 6 miles or so and call that good enough. But once I got rolling and got comfortable with the idea that I could do a long run instead of wussing out, then it got all good and happy. If I could just stop having really freaky dreams, that would probably help with that motivation when first getting out of bed.

16.1km/10mi today, with some light trail in the local golf course. I fell in the water when trying to cross a rocky section along the beach, got scratches everywhere !

Later, I got lost in a bushy area and had to go back. Next time I will use the navigation function on my Garmin, it should help

Overall a very nice run, the weather is still pretty nice and sunny here, with a balmy 17C/63F

Brief report from Germany. 70 miles this week (19 bf). Enjoying the rain and humidity here. Pavement is bf friendly. Graveled roads and trails not. A lot of sharp crushed stone. Trails are not very runable. Either rocky or wet and rooty and i don't want miss the scenery anyway. Great for fast hiking though. Plan is for a few bf miles daily with some long shod journeys mixed in. Like to give more details, but typing on a phone is a pain. Prost!

4.2 recovery paced miles this morning, just about identical conditions to 3 weeks ago, the same route, and same average heart rate, but I was a good half minute per mile faster than 3 weeks ago. I'll take that as a sign that my base aerobic fitness is continuing to improve.

Very cool Rick!

Yeah, freshly crushed sharp stone is the worst that I have had to run on so far, cept maybe very hot black asphalt.

Friday evening - ended up going on a hike down by the Boise River in my nice dress after a yummy dinner with friends at a restaurant there. Good thing I was barefoot. That would not have been fun in fancy shoes! One companion was concerned about goathead stickers, but I was more concerned about hidden glass in the sand, as there were signs of previous "night life." All in all, though, it was quite picturesque.

Boise River hike hidden trail.jpg First photo is one of our companions up ahead, Boise River rocky pennisula.jpg the next is riverside on a rocky peninsula along the river itself, and lastly the close-up of the rock that was a bit of a balancing issue to walk on with bare feet. Those in shoes or sandals said it was not a problem for them.Boise River somewhat challenging for balance.jpg

Saturday - morning 5 miles at comfortable pace, except for last mile which I picked up just a bit. I think that puts me at 31.5 miles for the week, so I am going to be regularly having new highs for weekly mileage now, but just a couple extra miles per week.

Any video footage? :D Nice run!

As for me, Sunday: 17.4km on the watch, but probably more like 11 miles after a bit of a GPS fail at the start cost me a few hundred metres. It was a cold (8 or 9C) rainy morning, with squalls coming through every 20 minutes or so, but I haven't had a long run for weeks so I decided to go anyway. The beach was almost empty, but I did pass a couple of other die-hards. When I got near the main beach car park I noticed that the local cross country running club were setting up for their annual run, so I jogged past one of the guys I know and asked him how crazy they were to be running on a day like this. I should have added "In shoes". :)

I ran on and picked up a few shells for my little girl. I don't understand the physics behind it, but I find that if I run with a shell in my hand it stops my fingers from getting cold - which was good because it started dumping on me and the wind picked up. At the 13km mark I was running away from my finish point, with the wind sheeting the rain onto my back. I decided to run a little further in the hope that I could turn around when the rain eased, but I didn't want to run too far either. In the end I realised I was just going to have to suck it up. I turned into the wind, and the rain bucketed down into my face. I was almost running with my eyes closed, and my shirt was so wet that I could actually hear the raindrops splish splashing on it as I ran. I was laughing at the absurdity of it all, and I realised that I actually enjoy running in horrible conditions - maybe it takes me back to the days of junior football training in the rain? I don't know, but it was fun. I walked back into the house looking like I'd just climbed out of the washing machine and asked my little girl if she wanted a hug. No takers.

Nice mileage Rick! I don't ever see myself even having the time to put those kind of miles in unfortunately. :(

Thanks for including the pics! Always nice to see as well as read.

As for myself, in addition to the ~17 miler monday I did 9.5 mile with some modest speedwork (4x 1mile intervals) yesterday, and a few other short runs during the week, putting me at 36 miles for the week. Might have even been the first time breaking 30 this year. And the first speedwork I've done this year. Think my leg issues are finally over. Still going to do speed cautiously, not trying to break my 5k record this year! But would still like to do decent in a 1/2 or the full yet this year.

I walked the dogs most days. Football is on so have to time it before or well after games. Rode my bike sat and sun. Going camping and rafting on the Deshutes river this thurs. i was hoping to be in running shape or at least hiking but it doesn't feel that way today. We'll see if by some miracle i can straighten out my leg by then. Bend is in the mountains and supposed to be an awesome place to run.

Saturday was a weird running day, did 4-5 miles that felt like I should have stayed home. Went out to late in the morning and got hit with a humidity index in the mid 30's C. It turned into a run that made my legs feel about a 100 lbs. But on a side note I discovered that a golf course that currently is not used had the gates open and public is allowed access. So I decided to use it for my trail runs. Did a couple of miles back and forth down the course and decided that I will be doing that at least once a week for my runs. On Sunday I had a great run, legs felt fantastic even though I did my hilly route into a 30-50 kmh head wind. Wound up running for a hour plus, so maybe 6+ miles, not sure as I'm still not using gadgets for monitoring my runs. What the best thing was about this run that about half through my run I discovered that I was engaging my glutes, haven't felt that for years Wow, did that make a difference, all I can say to that where have those glutes been the last 10 years or so. Made my run feel like I could have gone on for a another hour.
:)

Back when I was doing longer runs and putting in more miles regularly(about 10 miles at a time or so), sometimes it would take about 3 miles just for me to decide if I was actually interested in running at all that day. I just had to push past some point I guess. Funny how that happens for longer runs sometimes.

I wonder if the ultra people take the first 20miles to decide if they're into it?
:)

Got in 9.5 km last Sunday, 5.6 km Thursday, all barefoot. :) I haven't been running as much, I've also been doing Beachbody Focus T25 workouts at the same time, so my scheduling is messed up! I have to start getting my butt up an hour earlier to fit in a few more runs per week! It's been warm in the afternoon for running, so morning is definitely my favorite time for getting out!
My running shirts are all black, so the sun really gets me overheated! And people don't like seeing a shirtless hairy guy running down the paths either...Lol!
