Mileage reporting 21st week 2014

Great 5 mile run at 5:00 am. 72 deg. 73 %rh.
Lots of rabbits and one lighting bug

40 minutes of barefoot hiking (steep 45 degree angle). There were two groups of school kids out on this hike - age 12-14ish. With the first group I thought it would be hysterical if I hid in the bushes and jumped out and scared them -naked, of course. But I didn't (I must be getting old). However, when I started back down the hill and was about to pass them, the first kid yells out "Stranger danger!" To everyone else. And I yelled back, "Right, and no one is STRANGER than me!" No one laughed. :( Of course, how can teenagers hear anything other than their own super loud voices anyway?

Was on the spin bike first thing this morning for 45 minutes, then did a bunch of things I was supposed to do and swam at 6 PM for 20 minutes without stopping. Then, I signed up for my marathon in October (only $73, anyone want to visit the Boise area?) and immediately became ravenously hunger. I don't know what has me more stressed out at the moment, the idea of running that far (never have before) or eating enough to fuel my training. I have a hard time deciding how to eat enough already. I did make my peanut butter energy snack, though, and that should help.

I wish! That's not too far away, but right now that's just too rich for me.

About 3.25 miles yesterday and 3.8 today.

Received a book from Amazon yesterday, Athletics: How to Become a Champion by Percy Cerutty. Well, Cerutty isn't the best of writers, but it's still interesting to try to get a look back into the past. Some nuggets that relate to barefoot running:

Percy Cerutty said:
This race [The Aborigines], cut off from all other cultures and civilizations for countless thousands of years, is, as far as I have discovered, the only race of people from whom we can learn how God or Nature truly expected us to move over the ground. In a word, they appear to me to be, until contaminated by civilization, the only perfect movers -- posture, walking and running -- in our world. And they move differently to all other peoples. Put their feet to the ground differently. Hold themselves differently. Carry their arms differently.

The above is probably clearly talking about how the Aborigines of Australia moved differently because they lived barefoot. I bolded the words that had been italicized for emphasis in the text of the book.

Percy Cerutty said:
The 'boys' -- all my athletes are 'our boys' Nancy (my wife) and myself -- train without shoes [Cerutty is referring to the sand-dune running that was often done at Portsea], some even on the roads and over rocky terrain. Only the veriest newcomer turns up at our grass track with shoes. All our speed-work is done barefooted except when the grass may be dangerously slippery.

There are a fair number of photos in the books which show the Portsea runners going barefoot.

And, of course, in the photos of the athletes from on tracks at races, you see that the shoes they wear are fairly minimalist looking, thin coverings and a total lack of a bulky heel.

Now today, we've got behemoth running shoes. Perhaps they shouldn't really be called running shoes although that's what they're marketed as. But they ought not be called running shoes because they fundamentally interfere with the natural gait and stride runners should develop.

I've been doing some short runs in the forrest (4.5 km).

Tomorrow I have that 10K hill run. It's going to be sunny and very very hot (25 degrees celsius)
Here's the route that is 2.5 km long that you run 4 times: http://she.lundsok.se/wp-content/uploads/2014/05/SHE.pdf
Here's the hill profile of that route: http://she.lundsok.se/wp-content/uploads/2010/02/hojdprofil.jpg
and a picture from last year: http://she.lundsok.se/wp-content/uploads/2010/02/SHE09_c1.jpg

I don't have any experience in running in such hot weather and nothing but hills.
I have some carb with electrolyte drink I can have before and during.
I don't know what to wear. As little as possible or cover up a bit?

6.3 miles with baby girl in my luna monos for 2 miles and the rest in my vff speeds. At 2 miles in I was feeling really awful, as if I hadn't eaten enough the last couple days. I debated about turning back but I had planned on a 5 mile run and I need to learn how to run despite the lows like that. Glad I did because around mile 4 I started perking up and speeding up. At mile 5 I was back to the house but I decided I was feeling pretty good so I added on an extra little over mile extra loop. I believe thats a little over 19 miles for the week so far. Amazing how the running improves when you are losing weight and not getting injured. :) (knock on wood)

I did a 10K a couple years ago in conditions that sound a lot like what you are describing. It was challenging, but doable. We all got sunburns, even the people who wore sunscreen, but not enough to make me wish I had more clothes on. I wore the bare minimum. Hope you have fun!

Ok thank you for your input. I will wear sunscreen for sure! I get burned very easily.

1/2 mile of running. Saw a guy with unusually cute buns. You're welcome. I also did some hiking and some "drills" walking backwards up and down a hill. My exercise bra thought it would be funny to unhook itself on the top 3 AND bottom 3 hooks - and it hooks in front. That's awesome! For someone!

6 km under the summer sun at 2pm
burning asphalt,
"interesting" experience

My feet fry rather easily and quickly, especially on dark pavement.
No fun at all.
Be careful to check your skin; I think mine thins down a lot and becomes sensitive and has to rebuild after a baking, leaving me more prone to blisters and such on the following days.

Right. Sunscreen plus a visor or cap of some sort, but little else.
The one 10k I did that was a bit challenging (several sand dunes) wasn't hard on me while I ran, but afterwards I failed to refuel properly with fluids and food, so I would recommend making sure you have a meal afterwards and get out of the sun asap.

Ran 6 miles first thing this morning. It didn't get of to a great start, as my pond loop was thick with insects trying to fly down my throat and into my eyeballs. Fortunately, I had intended to walk a bit to warm up, so finished just that and found a new path. My feet surprised me by being a bit sensitive still from my race, but I took it slow and felt good. The afternoon was filled with garden yoga and squats.

This evening, my chef-daughter, who is at her new location near the Tetons wrote a "run report" that I think all the hard core I-don't-care-what-people-think runners around here should appreciate. She said I could share it: http://gourmetinthefield.com/how-to-make-a-stunning-entrance-into-a-room-of-strangers/

Laura,
that was awesome! tell her to put the pic at the end of the blog to allow the story to build some suspense.

Jen, free weights, not machines.

m-nada. too wiped out. i even drove to school
t-2hour bike ride. had over 2hr lunch so i did my grocery shopping.
w-1hr bike ride. cramming for 2 tests on friday

Line,
am i the only one here who won't use sunscreen? i know they say correlation is not causation but the numbers point to that stuff being bad for you. it only works on uva which is what your body needs to produce vitamin d. uvb is the bad and that gets through.

put some long sleeves on, light weight and go.

Ok. Yes. Good advise.

Ok. Thank you too. Now I'm not sure again. Well. I know it's bad and that I need the sun vitamin d. But I also get burned bad if I don't use it. Really bad. I'm a red head...
