I had a good long hike yesterday for 1.5 hours, with a beer intermission of about 30 minutes, followed by another 20 + minute hike, off-trail up and down some super steep stuff. That is an hour more hiking than I have been doing and surprisingly, even though my PF was pretty riled for a bit, this morning was the best it has felt -BY FAR! :) Super happy about that! Maybe it was the beer intermission? :p

had a 16 day hike with xeroshoes and totally barefoot combined. On last day i put my feelmax kuuva oots on because two bears were hanging in our camp site and i needed to be more mobile than usual. Safety before comfort :/

did the bears bring marshmallows or something? how long did they hang out?

They hanged in our camp until one of us, still sleeping, ran out of tent bare naked:p Luckily axes and knives we had taken out in last resort weren't needed.
Yeah, that's weird that barefoot guy gets scared the boots on, not off.
I was also bitten by the polecat and my feet are full of micro-scars from every day of hike.
Actually i quite loved being in nature regardless of snow, frost, rain and sometimes winds. What was bothering me were frogs between toes. Next time i hope i've upgraded my survival knife to a machete in case i run into bears again. During the hike we ran into two bears plus two who visited us in the camp.
Bears in this area are quite uncommon. There are about 300-400 bears in this country and i was lucky to see 1 percent of them.

Dude! Pepper Spray is the ONLY thing that will stop a bear attack. No, not guns, either.

Actually it's not "pepper spray" you want, it's "bear spray". If you don't specifically use a "bear spray" depending on strength of the "pepper spray" and how pissed off the bear is it will/may keep coming at you. I grew up in bear country up in NW Montana. Don't believe that all pepper sprays are the same, they're not. And for the record, I would rather carry a high powered firearm than wait till a bear gets within 10 feet of me so I can spray a bear spray and pray it works to deter it...

I stopped carrying pepper spray after it just irritated one dog who attacked me even more. This stuff doesn't work.
I'd say my survival knife needed to be upgraded anyways. It's hard to chop woods with it:p

Nick's right, it's not pepper spray. It's something specific to bears I am sure. I
Yes, a HIGH-POWERED firearm. I have heard stories and seen videos of bears, who have been shot and don't even flinch. It's all about the eyes...if they are blinded, they can't chase you.

I always carry a metal stick when I'm walking my pack. 1st to distract aggressive dogs, secondly to whale on their back if it doesn't work.

Fortunately we don't have bears here in the UK although I have been chased by a rather angry ostrich. (Although that's a whole other story) :)

Bear spray is still pepper spray, just the concentration of it is different I think.

I'm afraid that won't work with bears :)
Though in my life I've handled lots of dogs and one has trotted along with me for over 30 km during a hike.
I must say that if attacked by a dog, it's good to have somesort of shoes on.

Jildeleon, I'm sorry that i took over your topic and started talking about my things:p
I was too exhausted to make my own topic.

Hijacker!!! I am the BIGGEST thread hijacker on here, so I don't care. I have had other people's dogs run with me, too, probably cuz their owners were walking and running is more fun! :)

Mikey, up above, is the second biggest hijacker on here! Wouldn't be surprised if posts ended up here every day for the next 6 months that have NOTHING to do with hiking!!! :D And actually, I'm kinda curious about the ostrich, too!
