Mileage reporting 12th week 2014

I ran 12 minutes after my workout today. Can't increase tomorrow. My ankle now started to let me know it doesn't like this. If it's not one thing it's another. Sigh. It's always the left foot. There has never been anything with the right one. Why's that?? Good thing one food is great though :D
I will try 12 again tomorrow if my foot lets me, and then I'll stay at 12 for a while I guess :)

Hang in there Line:) Just do 10 minutes for a few runs and see how that goes. I'm like you always the left foot aches before the right foot.

I consider you a good forum friend, and have learned a lot from your comments and links.
Yes, absolutely. I consider you a good forum friend and enjoy your insights, as well.
OK, sorry Sid, this whole exchange has left a bad taste in my mouth. ... I apologize.
Please, please, no need for apologies. Nothing was taken personally. I actually appreciate these brilliant posts of yours, such as the one above. It's a contrast from the barefoot anthropologist, bass playing, Brazilian supermodel, frostnipped, weightlifting persona, and highlights your razor sharp mind. (Or perhaps you're like Satoshi Nakamoto, an amalgram of 6 different squirrels who merely share the same computer?)
No hard feelings.
Definitely!
Besides, with the time zone differences, as Andy has noted, does it really matter?
So, it's okay if I point out that he's an Aussie and was posting in the correct week, since it was already Monday for him? ;)

Great run Sly - that's insanely fast!

Another enjoyable run for me this morning - 11km or whatever that is in miles. It was meant to be 8km, but this was another run where I just found myself going a little further than planned, without really being able to identify the point when I decided not to turn around. I'm loving that.

Today was picture postcard stuff - I started out by the light of the full moon on the beach, with lone clumps of kelp glistening in the moonlight. Like little aliens with black and silver tentacles. So much bad prose going through my head as I ran. I made it to the end of my out and back route just in time to turn around and run the last half of my run towards a glorious sunrise, with pink and orange clouds and some nice sun rays stretching upwards. Life is good.

Are you sure that there's not some sort of discrepancy between your left and right feet? I ask, because I also had some left/right differences, which in my case was due to a bunion and forefoot varus on the left foot.

I don't know but I have thought that there might be a reason for this. It's not just one place on the left foot though. It has been on top, underneath, now the ankle and another place on top.. It moves around..

We're good Sid. Maybe I was paranoid because I was a little sleep-deprived and over-caffeinated. I'm glad the humor came off as intended. And no Jen, don't ever worry about hijacking a thread. I consider hijacks an essential part of BRS forums.

Anyway, had a nice 3.1-mile run home yesterday, then another great deadlift session, managed 305lbs, cuz I was too lazy to get the rinky dink weights for an even 300. So I had four 25-lb and two 20lb plates on each side of the 25-lb bar. It was a strain, but everything felt solid, so I don't think I'm at risk of overdoing it. Then I pyramided down and finished with the power cleans I had missed last week. I'm still keeping those relatively low weight at 125lb, cuz the movement toward the end puts a little stress on my left shoulder. The rest of me feels like it can do more, and I've done 175 with ease before, but I'm trying to be extra careful with the left shoulder. It feels close to normal again, and I don't want to do anything to set it back.

It's funny, with this latest surge in ST, the feeling I get is not so much one of getting stronger, but of feeling really solid and centered. I can feel it while doing chores, playing with the kids, and while running. I think it's the new emphasis on the big lifts, which really work the whole body, but especially the back and butt areas. The idea now is to reach ExRx's 'intermediate' strength standards on all the lifts, and then work more of the secondary exercises back in. Still, I like the simplicity of just doing 1-5 exercises per workout, so maybe I'll keep it like this even after I reach my max weight goals.

This morning I got in a nice 7.4-mile run. After a mile my feets were nice and toasty at 31F/22F windchill, so I extended the planned 3.1-mile run, knowing that later it's supposed to snow and rain, which means I may have to don the Sockwa G4s again for a few days. Wanted to get in as many bare miles while I could. My uncallused middle toes seemed fine with it.

Looking good Sly! You look like a real runner. Way to represent your barefoot peeps!

Green with envy, but thanks for sharing Larry!

Last night I did about an hour weeding my backyard. I still have probably a couple hours left which I will try to get done today. Strangely, my legs feel pretty good after my race on Sunday. I only have just a small amount of tightness in the front of my hips and then my calves are slightly tight as well. Not sure if I will get a run in today or not, but I will for sure tomorrow.

A picture postcard of serenity!

That's interesting. During transitioning, I noticed various aches that needed stretching after workouts, but not necessarily any that would stop me during running.

I will say that from the beginning, I noticed a structural difference between my left and right foot. One was narrower, and one was wider. I could tell that the foot strike was different. One was more slappy. Any calluses, or blisters, or scuffs were in different spots. Hard surfaces really highlighted these structural problems, leading me to prefer trails.

Long before I knew what it was, I noticed that my left 1st met wasn't tripodding correctly. http://www.thebarefootrunners.org/index.php?posts/150368

I've recently addressed a lot of these issues, and I notice these discrepancies less when using a midfoot landing. http://www.thebarefootrunners.org/index.php?posts/150370

Hopefully, you'll figure out your situation soon. Good luck!

I have differences too between my feet. My left foot is wider with a higher arch while my right foot is longer with a flatter arch. My left foot I rarely have pain although I have problems wearing out the sole under the first met on hard surfaces while my right I tend to get PF in if I am not careful with stretching and rolling. On roads and sidewalks I can run just fine, in sandals, but barefoot really gets me. Trails I seem to be good with sandals or barefeet. I notice a midfoot landing seems to really help me out too, like Sid said helps for him.

4.33 miles with bare feet at about 36-40°F with a chilling wind. Double layered everywhere other than my feet! I was concerned about running with my calves having been tight since the race Saturday, but I couldn't feel a thing while I ran at my now normal MAF pace. It seems they are only tight when I'm walking, sitting, or sleeping! But, I still felt it was wise not to push the mileage today. Was thinking of swimming, but my 2 year old grandson came over and we had to talk to chickens and make cookies. Priorities.

Only an hour or so of weeding tonight. Hopefully can knock out the remaining bit tomorrow pretty quick, then to level everything, spray, and then lay woodchips. If I owned the place I would just throw down some grass seed instead, but it's not, I just can't take the jungle of weeds out there anymore.

Tuesday afternoon, another 3.1 miles at 36F/28F windchill, trying to get in some dry miles bare before the snow.

Then Bench press at 3/4 max so that I'd have plenty of gas leftover for flies, pullovers, curls, triceps extensions, and dips. I've been especially lax about the flies, tri's, pullovers, and dips lately. I think the evolving strategy is that once I reach my max goal in a particular lift, which I have with the bench press (I'm already at the 'intermediate' level according to ExRx.net), I'll alternate between (1) focusing on that lift's max and (2) working more on the secondary exercises in that lift's workout. Or maybe I should do a weekly alternation regardless of how close I am to my max goal, I dunno. Maybe one week max lift focus, one week secondary exercises focus, for squats, deadlifts, and the rest as well. We'll see. I definitely feel sore in a different kind of way today, and variation in stimulus is key to keeping the body always adapting and improving, at least until age starts reversing the process.

This morning, a couple of inches of snow, so I donned my Vivo Neo Trails and walked the mile to my office in order to take in perhaps the last glorious winter wonderland scene before full-on spring hits, and also so that I wouldn't bruise the bananas in my pocket. Just as well to have an excuse to walk with shoes on -- I'm starting to feel some painful heel fissures again. I think the heel callus may be getting ready to molt too. Bummer. A spring ritual I can do without. Time to summon the pumice.

Here's what it looked like at 2:30am:

And here's the same street, just outside of my house, almost a month ago after our last big snowfall hit (the above photo was taken just beyond the stop sign up the street in this photo):

30 minutes of swimming with only a couple of little breaks at the beginning while I got things set-up. Sun was blinding me on one side! Hope to get some yard work done, but then I'm going to get a tattoo, just a small one, first one.

Everyone's body is imbalanced -it has a lot to do with having a dominant hand -cuz everytime you do anything with that hand you are twisting your body to the same side over and over. If you can teach yourself to use your non-dominant hand, whenever possible, it will help balance out how your feet hit the ground. Mountain Pose, in yoga is great for this -as I am rediscovering- as it's emphasis is on the "triangle" on the bottom of your foot -the 3 points of contact your feet should be evenly distributing weight on, when you do anything. When done correctly, you can feel your body literally untwisting, in order to re-align itself to establish even weight distribution on the feet. It's pretty incredible.
