Thanks for your response. I think the general consensus (outside of the keto community) is that doing a very low carb diet with lots of running could be bad for my bones or just not a smart idea in general. I just want to be careful, so I thought I'd ask.

I don't do that much running actually, just 1-2 miles at a time. So I think for now I'm fairly safe even though I eat a kind of weird diet.

Some day I want to run more, but I've only been doing barefoot about a year. I'm still working my way up. Maybe when I can go farther I will start eating that running gel stuff or some kind of carb I can take with me on the run like raisins or something. But that would have to be more like 5-10 miles rather than 1-2 I think.

I'm not a doc, but I thought I'd share my personal experience, as it may be relevant. I've adopted a ketogenic diet of sorts, practicing intermittent fasting for the past 5+ years. I've also been playing around with a paleo-vegetarian diet for the last month or so and feel phenomenal. I've been running barefoot for the last year or so, averaging about 40 miles per week, and find that if anything my diet helps me recover faster and ensure that I'm consuming nutrient dense foods. Whether this is related to the ketogenic nature of the diet, or just that I incidentally also cut out junk / processed foods, I can only guess.

Also, from the research I've done, runners have lower carb needs than the media would lead you to believe, and excess grains may even promote inflammation, which is never good. Of course, it'd be best to talk to a nutritionist, but I say if you feel good, keep doing what you're doing. And who cares if it's "weird" ;)
