Hey all,

I remember reading this short story in a school book, back in 5th grade, and I was wondering if anyone remembers it, and could tell me the title and/or author. I'd like to track it down and re-read it.

It involves barefoot running.

There's a track meet/race going on, and a young man shows up, wearing jeans, cowboy boots and a hat (I think). He didn't know about the race, but wants to run, so he takes off his boots and runs in his jeans. Also, since the track is rough, he runs on the grassy outside of the track. And he wins, though when he finishes he's still on the grass, so doesn't break the finish ribbon. The 'normal' runner/winner claims that the barefoot guy didn't really win, because of that.

The only other thing I remember is that the story is told in first person, by a guy watching the whole thing.

Ring any bells? I wonder if this story somehow made me more open to barefoot running later on in life.
