Dear Penthouse,

I never thought it would happen to me, but...

OK, maybe not that kind of confession. But here's the score: After returning to running (OK, it's been a week, work with me on this) after having laid off of it for a couple of months, I find running S2G...well...tedious. Constantly looking down, and even then, missing pointy things that poke my feet, getting torqued that the paths have this small gravel/large sand on them that hurt, not lifting my foot enough over a bump and taking the nose cone off of my big toe, getting pissed when someone does a crappy job of paving... It makes me want for a pair of shoes. Not big squishys, mind you (though "Big Squishys" would be a great name for a band: "Running Pirate and the Big Squishys". Yes, that sings), but minshoes. Just a wafer thin layer of rubber between the road and the soles [of Mr. Creosote for the Monty Python lovers, out there].

Makes me wonder if I've been fooling myself all along, or if running S2G has run its course for me.

Thoughts? Anyone else lose the faith? Where's Lomad? I need a hug... :D

Hey Pirate, I know exactly where you are mentally. I am there too. I am in the moderate squishies right now and loving them. Part of me wants to return to s2g or my 6mm sandals, but then I would go back to things hurting and afraid my pf will flare up again. I would just say do what's right for you, what ever that may be.

RP, after running BF in freezing rain today I was questioning the S2G sanity (it could be a long winter).
If it feels good do it, if not then wear squishy things.:coldfeet:

Follow your bliss. Don't do anything because you feel it's ideologically correct. The important thing is to stay fit (while staying injury-free of course). To do that consistently (and not disappear for months) you have to do something you enjoy. If you like running, run! If you like running barefoot, run barefoot! If you like bouldering, boulder!

I also find the random direct hit by a sharp rock in the middle of my mets annoying, but I love the soleful stimulation otherwise, like not having to think about my form and landing technique, and hate having hot, sweaty feet, so I put up with it. No marriage is perfect.

Just do a cost-benefit analysis, and if minshoes win, you're in luck; there's a lot to choose from these days.

sorry......what is S2G? :sorry:

ahhhh.......thank you ! shhhhhh don't tell anyone! :wacky:

Hi, haven't posted for a really really really long time. Last year was training for my first half marathon S2G. ("S2G," lol! Love it! Been out of the loop and haven't encountered that.) Around the time I started running 9 miles, got a terrible injury. :( Was not writing my blog at the time so no one in my barefoot world knew/knows. It took 8-9 months to heal.

So, just started running again in the past 2 weeks. I was really worried that I wouldn't love it any more and would need shoes. Before getting out there I thought that I would need shoes to start training in the cold. In the past, I felt that I could only do the cold weather thing because I was already conditioned from having run over the summer. No way could I start "cold" in the cold, I thought.

However, I went out there for some very short runs S2G! Loved it as much as ever. Was pleasantly surprised.

But if I didn't experience it that way, who knows if I wouldn't be shoe shopping now. If you like it, do it!! If you don't like it, find out what you do like!

I wish I had your, er uh, problem.

But when I could run, I was always able to get in tune with my run no matter what the surface. The debris on the ground made it feel like a game. It was like dancing for me. And I miss it.

Do what feels good for you though. Run bare where and when you can, and opt for a layer of protection when needed. Mix it up, like was said.

Welcome back, Fresca! Glad you have recovered and are finding your way back.

No no-shoes for me for well over a year, I'm 100% minimalist these days and happy with that, as my growing shoe collection will show.

plus S2G is kinda contra-indicated these days for me.
