So I'm doing some things to be more healthy. I've cut down on drinking a bit, I'm quitting meat for a while, and I decided to try these little Yakult probiotic drinks. I've been taking them a few days and my stomach does seem a tad better but it could be the placebo effect. So, what say you all? Anyone had experience with these or informed opinions on the subject? I'm also eating Greek yogurt.

Probiotics seem like a good idea to me....supporting your digestive system supports your immune system. I have heard from various medical professionals that probiotics have been studied (especially when taking antibiotics), but the tangible effects are still pretty contentious. I can tell you that my wife has had great success eating plain yogurt for her immune system....I think this is also because of the live cultures....In any case I don't think it can hurt.

i bought some kimchi the other day. i don't know, i likely made too many changes in one day because i got a bit constipated. too much hot sauce, rice noodles, kimchi, and i don't remember what else in one day.

i don't have experience with either that you're using. watch out for sugar on yogurt. they tend to use a lot. you can also get kefir, sour kraut, kimchi, kombucha. why does everything start with a K?

I know we give it to our 2 year old whenever he has to take anti-biotics. They tend to harm the good bacteria and cause diaper issues. With the probiotics he keeps chugging along just fine. So there is more to them than just a placebo. The big question if you need the bacteria or not.

I take a bunch just because they happen to be in my Vibrant Green powder that is part of my daily protein shake. If you do get them you need to store apporpriately. Usually in the freezer. THe minute you open the container they start losing their effectiveness.

These are little liquid drinks. They are a couple of ounces and pretty convenient. I have some GI issues and I am looking for something short of Rx. What is weird is my roommate in Iraq and I both have had the same issues ever since being there. So far these little drinks seem to be helpful.

Oh great NSDR... Were you ever in Afghanistan? I get weird little bumps all the time along with GI issues...

It's actually why I don't watch the monsters inside me show. Creeps me out horribly bad.
No, just Iraq. I was all over the country and often in the field but he was just in Baghdad in the wire. I ate a lot more MREs and food trucked out in those green bins, while he ate all the chow hall food and has it way worse... so I'm not sure if that has anything to do with it. We also failed to use bottled water to brush our teeth a lot of the time in Baghdad....

I'm barely even sure what it was like to eat in a chow hall overseas as I was at a little FOB that we started for 10 months and we mostly ate MRE's (1 a day for several months with no other food) or a couple times we ate some local goat. Water, sometimes we had it and sometimes we didn't, dang dirt storms would keep the choppers from flying in supplies to us. VA tells me there is no "bugs" from there that get inside you and create these weird bug bite like bumps I get. They told me it was probably bugs in my house, which we've since had fumigated despite no one else in my house getting them and the bug guy not finding one bug in here, and I still get the weird bug bite like bumps.

That is very odd. I'd post on an IAVA forum or something and see if others have had that? One thing I have also done is I turn all colored sheets and such white since I have been home. I was around a ton of IEDs and in a vehicle that hit one so I was worried about depleted uranium, but the docs at the VA said there is no correlation and had no idea. I changed soaps several times, foods... and I am the only one in my gamily who does this. We can't by any light colors or pastels or they look like they have been bleached. I was just glad when my kid came out healthy.

I doubt this is what's going on with you, Nick, but our daughter for some really strange, inexplicable reason gets bitten by 'grass mites' (wait, I'll wiki it..... ah, ok, chiggers, ugh). She gets little itchy bumps, and no one else in the house, or in the town as far we and the pediatrician can tell, gets them. Not even our animals show signs of having them.

Just saying, it is possible to be the only one that some little critter is attracted to. But you're probably right and the VA is screwing you over.

Ya it's just weird Willie. I only get them on my arms and my chest. No where else. We have what we call no see ems, not sure what technical name is, but you can actually see them, they are just really tiny and mostly you do miss them with just a cursory glance. Those we usually only see out at my inlaws place though out in the country.

Wow... Just wow... That is weird. I was lucky to have never gotten hit by an IED, but the airforce's humvee directly in front of my truck got hit 6 times. Every time those lucky sobs walked away with only ringing ears and maybe some bruises. Their truck looked like a command vehicle which is why it was targeted so much. Seemed like at least once a month for a while there they were flying new humvee's in for them. Have you tried talking to a regular dr and seeing if they can help? I know for a fact that the VA doesn't like to own up to anything until there are just too many vets coming down with the same thing. Glad your daughter came out alright too. I know I was glad when my son came out alright and I will be glad/relieved again when the new bun in the oven comes out alright.

I have taken probiotics for a few years now but have eased up the past few months. They help with inflammation in your body, and most Americans have a lot of inflammation due to the types of food we eat. Inflammation equals pain. Taking real probiotics can help lessen your pain.

The thing is, you don't want to purchase any so-called probiotics on the shelf. You want to purchase only the ones that are shipped and kept refrigerated. This is what ensures that the living organisms/cultures stay alive. Once you've purchased them this way, of course, you must keep them in the fridge to keep them alive. If you purchase them OTC, then you will get very few living organisms, and you won't get the full effect, and it will be a complete waste of your money. Why these companies are allowed to market and sell crap like that, I have no idea.

Another thing is, the live cultures that are found in yogurt are very small in quantity, so you would have to eat a ton of yogurt in order to equal the same amount of live cultures you would get in one capsule.

If you go to your local health store or herb shop, they should have it. Call first.

Here's what I buy and have always recommended to others. It's a bit pricey, but well worth it:

I took the seven-day course of 200 billion to start with (a starter course):

Then I had been taking 100 billion (2 of these each day) per day:

i forgot to mention since you're a poor govt employee, those suggestions i made can be done by you at home. if you're so inclined. looking at the rest of your diet helps too. hope you get some relief.

TJ woot woot! That's important info! The yogurt drinks aren't technically permitted to make their phony health claims here anymore. But of course their marketing depts aren't stupid and they find language that conveys the snake oil claims without stepping over the regulations... Activia is always getting flak for it.

You'd have to eat a ton of Activia to have any real benefit. It's easier to just take a capsule.
