hi everybody, sorry my story is so long but this is where i have come from....

i have ran at multiple points in my life for exersize but always on a treadmill. about three years ago i blew out my left knee completley had to have a cadaver acl put in, meniscus repaired and all the other ligaments left slightly torn.
my husband and i got out of shape and fat so we thought it would be good to start hiking, i hadent done much other than some tennis. we have some of the most beautiful hikes around so off we went with my two kids.
On that hike we saw five fingers for the first time my son loved them. we felt so great after that day it was the beginning of my new life. my son and i bough five fingers and wore them on hikes. about a month later my husband and i started running on the flat spots it felt great.
Before you knew it we were only running of course i got caught up in all the great brooks shoes and loved that cushion. we ran about 25-35 miles a week plus i played tennis in a league. i set a goal for the carlsbad 1/2 one year after training with only a turkey trot under my belt. i loved it and it was my drug. finished with a 1;49 time
I singed up for the lajolla half, safari half, rock and roll half, americas finist city half and the silver strand half. i was most excited for the tripple crown. within that time up to the rock and roll we did a few 5ks with the kids also.
As the story goes i started getting major pain in my right knee, not the one fixed. i am stubbon so i ignored it but as it always plays out i ended up collapsing with the worst it band problems the physical therapist had seen (tight as a drum). i was so depressed all that i had worked for was taken away. the pain never let me run more than a mile or two so i gave it up for months
i still wanted to complete the tripple crown and the silver strand not sure how. i did pt for 4 months, no help, they said i needed to give it up for a year, i did yoga, stretching, glute and hip strengthing, all no help.
I ran the americas finist in orthothics and cascadias in sheer pain, completed with my worst time 2;18, stayed positive. but something needed to change. i had read all the running books i could get my hands on, no need for speed, born to run, bobs barefoot book and many more anyway. i put my shoes away for ever.
i pulled out the old vibrams and ran the silver strand with a smile one month of training in them. miracusley never saw that it band problem again. my time was 2;07. now i have ran two 4.5 mile runs barefoot completley, trails, in the rain, branches, goat heads you name it i am in love, even the chip seal sucks but i love the challenge, my feet feel great.
i will only barefoot now unless i am on hot lava, i feel like a kid again and never saw any itband or patella problems ever again thanks to barefooting. now this is what i preach to everyone in pain, ditch those lame shoes or you will go lame....

Welcome Christie, it is great once you have found your bliss right? I can almost relate to your story, I as well had major knee issues and was told I would never run, I have since proved them wrong and continue to defy the sceptics and the nay-sayers daily. Lots of great stories here, and welcome once again.

thanks for all the inspiration after reading your book i have decided i am going to do the tripple crown this year again only barefoot, i am also on a mission to do a marathon for the first time. last time i went to the orthopedic i told him i wanted to do a marthon he said " please dont" he wasnt very reasuring but after being re introduced to my feet i will never listen to him again unless he is being incouriging. thanks

Hi Christie - Welcome. Your story is similar to mine. I had major knee pains, hip and ankle problems until I read Barefoot Running. Within 6months the knee pain had gone and I was hooked on BF running. That was 2 years ago. Take it easy and try not to overdo it.

You don't have to tell me twice. Hey, welcome, Christie! Romona, C to the A! I lived in Dublin and San Ramon. Glad to have you here.

Hi Christie, glad you're here!

Welcome Christie,

I come from an injured past also. I haven't figured everything out yet, but going bare was a step in the right direction. This year I have made a lot of progress with few injuries. So are you doing any of the Carlsbad races at the end of January? I'm signed up for the Marathon and another BRS member ThomDavid is doing the half (I believe).

"i will only barefoot now unless i am on hot lava, i feel like a kid again"

HI Christie--I love your quote (above) and your story. I am in Orange County--and only hike/run trails as well. When it's "hot lava" summertime, I just adjust the time of day I hike/run to early or late, and so far (three years) it's working--after one 3pm mishap that first summer during which I put a 2"x3" blister on my sole.

Since barefooting hasn't been 100% of what I need to run as much as I want (I sort of overdid the running last summer and have been slowly getting back into it since September) I carry a camera on my trail adventures and blog away about them at www.theagavin.com. Via my blog I've recently "met" Joe from Poway who is also a no-shoes hiker, and we're trying to get a North San Diego County barefoot trail excursion scheduled -- are you interested in joining us? He put a post on the BRS hiking forum...reply there or here?

Anyone else in the area is also welcome to join us on the barefoot trail!
