Married to Jennifer DeLeon, living in Scappoose, Oregon. My military experience was with the 82nd Airborne Division of the US Army where we routinely ran the equivalent of a marathon, around the outskirts of Fort Bragg North Carolina or Fort Benning Georgia, several times a month. Wearing clunky jump boots was not my favorite part of running. In addition to our free style running around the outskirts of the post, we ran 8 to 12 miles every morning for PT. The close order "double time" was what drew me into running in the first place. There is a mesmerizing, almost hypnotic aspect of running with a large group of people, all in lock-step that I liken to deep meditation. It was a fantastic feeling. After leaving the Army, I continued my running in Los Angeles, California where I worked. I ran the first 4 LA marathons in addition to half’s, 5 and 10K's almost every weekend. For almost 18 years I kept up a training schedule of 60 - 70 miles per week. Back then (80's and 90"s) the running world was not as diverse or technical as I see today. The barefoot crowd was non-existent or at least not in the main stream. Today, everywhere I look I pass either minimalists or barefooters. Once I moved to Portland, I dropped out of the running, partly due to other obligations and partly due to the weather. I married Jennifer in 2007 and she has inspired me to get back into running, enjoying the constant rain, and now the feel of my bare feet on the ground.
