I'm sick! I can't believe it! I haven't been sick in years.

I have a terrible sore throat, headache, exhaustion (what's new there?), stuffed-up nose AND runny nose (go figure!).

Got any recommendations on how to kick this thing sooner?

Any home remedies?

Help!

Whatever you do, don't put shoes on your runny nose; you'll just get hurt.

Whisky and water helps me when I get a cold/sinus infection. Whisky takes the edge off and water keeps you hydrated.

I hope you feel better soon!

Doesn't matter that it's like 8:30 in the morning? Got vodka, no whiskey, this time.

Thanks, Ram!

earlier is better! It's 4:45 somewhere!

Come on boss. We've got to get you well.

My German mother in-law makes a remedy of Jim Beam, Lemon Juice, and Honey. I think it just dulls the symptoms but it's worth a shot.

Me? I just stand in the dirt. I haven't had a cold since barefoot running. (The better diet, increased activity, and me being a recluse has nothing to do with it i'm sure).;)

Remember what I say about drinking in the morning: The nice thing about it is that you don't need to wear a watch; someone will always tell you the time. "You're drinking Scotch?! It's 7 in the morning!"

As for the sickness, here's what I'd say: If it's not gone in 3 days, go to the Dr and get some meds. You know that thing that I posted about a couple of weeks ago? I've been battling it for 10 weeks now....so I hope it's not that....

Your kids probably brought the bug home from school, half the folks around here have it too. So far two of the "kids", but not us. Half of my buddy's have it too. Feel better soon!

Here's a home remedy that is very, very effective to cure colds and counteless of other issues.
8 oz of hot water
2 tbsp of raw vinegar
1 or 2 tbsp of raw honey.
Mix well and drink--it tastes horrible but it's very effective.
Hope you feel better soon.

Interesting, wonder how/why that works? Any way to make it not taste as bad?

I used to know but don't remmeber much all I know is that they both are very healthy.
Supposedly raw honey and raw vinegar are loaded with antioxidants and B vitamins...but you can google the benefits of both on they raw condition and you'll be amazed of the health benefits.

Where did you learn of that concoction, Mrs. Dama? I get the alcohol mix with the lemon and honey, but vinegar?! Geez! But then... I do like to drink the pickle juice out of the pickle jar. Maybe I will give it a try. It will surely open your sinuses, right? Ha!

I try to avoid antibiotics at all costs. They totally take all the lubricant out of my whole body, it feels like, like they're eating me alive. Here's something interesting: During my last set of surgeries, the doctor had me on an IV of antibiotics during the four-hour surgery. After awaking fully and talking about post-op care, I asked about a prescription of antibiotics, and he said just apply Betadine twice a day to the incisions. He said the thinking in the medical community is changing when it comes to prescribing and using antibiotics, that more and more doctors are starting to find other ways to treat infections and stave off infections. Of course, you can't rub Betadine on a cold, but I liked his approach, followed his advice, and got through the incisions' healing without an infection. With the last surgeries, I took antibiotics post-op (well, half of the prescription; I just hate taking them). So, if I can do without them, I will.

I had a book years ago, all about vinegar and honey remedies.
But I was already using that home remedy long before the book(actually it was my mom's home remedy, we hardly ever got sick back then and when we started having the sniffles or a sore throat that what she will gives us, either that or cinnamon tea with honey).
When I feel a sore throat coming I fix myself a vinegar and honey drink and is all good.
Remember though, both the vinegar and haoney have to be raw.

So you're saying no pickle juice? Hee.

Exactly, no pickle juice.
Pickle juice rules! I started drinking it years ago before every marathon. It's a sure fire way to prevent cramping.
I always used to get calf cramps around mile 22. Now they are almost never a problem. It's an old secret that coaches have used for many years.

For sinus infections I always use "Simply Saline" nasel spray. I'm not sure if it shortens the duration but I think it helps.
I hope you are feeling better soon.

OK, since we’ve mentioned vinegar and – now – sinus infections, I guess it’s time to share my story.

During my 10-week foray, I’ve been suffering from sinus infections as well. Trying to avoid going to the doctor for this, I did some Googling and saw a recommendation to put a little bit of apple cider vinegar in with the saline solution in a Neti Pot. The logic being that the ACV is a disinfectant and will thus kill the sinus infection…so, I grab my Neti Pot and put about 2 tablespoons of ACV in with about 8 oz of saline (about a 12.5% concentration). I mix it up, and deploy it in to my sinuses…

Now, up until this point, I did not know I had muscles in my nose, but sure enough, I did, because something up there clamped down to stop the flow because it burned like fire! So now, my nose was on fire, my eyes were watering and I’m coughing up a storm because some ran down the backside and made it in to my lungs….and then – as if on cue – I suddenly needed to pee…

It was as if my body was saying “Two can play at that game, a***ole. Maybe you should go back to drinking, because you never did any of this weird s**t back then…”

So – I gather myself and check that website that told me about the ACV. Turns out that I should have put ½ teaspoon of ACV in the Neti Pot…. so just take that cautionary tale when using home remedies…

…no wonder I burnt my nose off….

I agree on the avoiding antibiotics, not only does it have unpleasant side effects on your body (nausea, diarrhea, yeast infections, etc), but it's not necessarily good to go on antibiotics for everything. That is how "super bugs" have been formed that have learned to fight off most antibiotics.

As for sinus infections, I suggest sinus rinse, but I've never tried the above Apple Cider Vinegar version (ouch!). NeilMed is the brand I have, and it is a sinus RINSE not the netti pot. I like it better because you can control the flow, and also it comes with a buffer that makes it not burn and sting. I've used it multiple times in a row, a couple times a day, for a bad sinus infection because I just keep getting nasty green crap out. I've avoided antibiotics for multiple sinus infections over the years I've been using it. That and lots of water, and of course, good healthy food. :D Hope you feel better soon.
