Watery Roads

Last week, we had bizarre weather. I ended up running on wet roads and through puddles even though it wasn't raining. I had a great run and my feet were either numb or just enjoyed it.My latest blog post here A barefooted friend of mine says her feet get cut up pretty bad when running on wet roads.

What's your experience with wet roads? Have you done it? How did it go?

I love doing short runs (3 to 5 miles) on wet roads and splashing in puddles. I think my running form is good enough to not get hurt even on wet surface but my understanding is that poor technique really shows after a run on wet road since the wet skin gets softer.

I wish I could do long runs barefoot on wet roads like more experience runners do but I'm not there yet. I think it's much more a question of technique than toughness of the feet or how wet the feet and roads are.

Have fun in the puddles!

At first, it was very uncomfortable for me, primarily because I was worried about losing more skin as it got softer. Good form makes that a non-issue. In fact, as the skin gets softer, the little rocks that sometimes zap me on asphalt when it's dry seem to hurt much less when wet. I have theorized that this is due to the plantar skin being softer and thus more flexible when soaked for a while, so it wraps around the rock and effectively spreads the impact over a broader surface.

I hated getting wet feet when shod, as it meant both extra weight to slog around with every step, and quite often it also resulted in blisters. I love splashing through puddles and mud without a care (except being sure to know what's in them first), and especially during Southern summers, the rain is wonderfully cooling. Just be sure not to get lazy with your form, and you'll havea blast.

Enjoy!
