Because I took pretty much the whole winter off, I'm starting over from scratch with the plantar skin toughness. (To be completely honest, I took the winter off from any exercise at all, so my cardio fitness level took a big hit too.) In one way though, I'm happy about it because spending the last 4 months in mostly just wool socks has helped to further strengthen the internal working parts of my feet and ankles. I am feeling much stronger this spring and not at all injured (a first for me in my short running career).
BUT it's no fun to have hurty feet. I got out for a 2 mile run this morning. If I had managed to stay on smoothish streets the whole time, I probably could have done it all barefoot. But I, a creature of habit and nostalgia, veered off the newer part of town and ended up in the neighborhood where I used to run before BFR. It's full of craggy patched blacktop, peppered with blocks of chip-and-seal. Throw in the large pointy rocks from the occasional gravel driveway, and it's just no fun for a girl with sensitive tootsies. After 1-1/3 miles, I put the socks on.
Socks didn't really help, though, because the cotton slides around some and for me, that exacerbates any form errors. If I had toughed it out, I probably wouldn't have that hot spot on the ball of my left foot. I look really classy hobbling around like an old lady.
Dear feet,
I'll pick my route more carefully next time. I promise. Please don't stay angry at me.
Love,
Norm
