Barefoot Running - A start

So this account is blogging my introduction to barefoot running.
I’ve been running barefoot on a treadmill for about 6 months and in Vibram Bikilas out on the road.
I got interested initially after watching a programme called “The Truth About Sports Products”. About all the over marketed sports products like sports drinks promising extra performance etc.
It featured a part of the programme about running shoes, spoke with Daniel Lieberman (see his site here)

and talked of these elite barefoot runners. After speaking with a friend about he told me about a running tribe in South America who run with no shoes and run animals to collapse when they hunt. They run several hundred miles with no shoes.
It sparked my interest and in my googling of the subject came across “Born to Run” by Chris McDougall.

Like pretty much everyone who’s read it, it set me off on the obsession of barefoot running.
I could probably be described as a hobby runner with a few small accomplishments in running but someone who just enjoys a good run. I’ve run a half marathon, a few marathon legs and put in plenty of miles over the years. I’ve never run a full marathon or an ultra but just love to run.
Soon after reading Born To Run I bought a pair of Vibram Bikilas and started running in them, thinking if its good enough for Barefoot Ted, it’s good enough for me. I didn’t think I was quite up to real barefooting just yet so went halfway. (I now know I went about this backwards).
I’ve since purchased “Barefoot Running - Step by Step” by Ken Bob Saxton and realised I’ve been running barefoot incorrectly and am setting about learning the proper technique. I’ve set myself a goal of running a half marathon on the 28th June 2013 barefoot. Proper barefoot…
In preparation for this I will be running a leg of the Belfast Marathon this year, barefoot.
This will be used as a diary/blog to track and share my progress and learnings as I go.
